Could You Pass Army Physical Requirements?

Recommended Posts

Quote

Physical Characteristics

The Army has strict height, weight and body-fat composition rules for recruits. Allowable measurements vary by age and gender. Body fat can’t be more than 20 to 26 percent in men. For recruits who exceed allowable body-fat percentages, the Army has a monitoring program that mandates monthly weight loss.

Health Conditions

Army recruits must take a medical fitness exam to spot health conditions that could cause problems on the battlefield. The service may reject recruits with gastrointestinal ulcers, acute or chronic pancreatitis, hernias, anemia, bleeding disorders, dental problems such as missing teeth, etc. Recruits with hearing problems and poor night vision may also miss the cut. Vision must be at least 20/30 to 20/40 in one eye, and 20/70 to 20/100 in the other eye, with or without corrective lenses. Army docs also check recruits for joint problems such as poor mobility and arthritis.

Boot Camp

To complete boot camp, Army recruits have to pass the Basic Training Physical Fitness Test with three challenges:  Men 17 to 21, have two min. each for 35 push-ups, 47 sit-ups, and two-mile run in 16 min/36 sec. Men 22 to 26, have two min. for 31 push-ups, 43 sit-ups, and two-mile run in 17 min/30 sec.

Army Rangers

To join the elite Army Rangers raid force, recruits have to meet stringent fitness criteria. All physical challenges, including push-ups and sit-ups, are timed, with required minimums. Ranger recruits have two min. each for 49 push-ups, and 59 sit-ups. They have to complete a two-mile run in 15 min/12 sec, as well as a five-mile run in 40 minutes. They must be able to perform six untimed pull-ups. A 16-mile hike with a 65-pound pack in 5 hours and 20 minutes or less and an untimed 15-meter swim in full Ranger gear are also mandatory.

I could do the army ranger one, but the time can't be measured consecutively.

I'm 47, take only two medications, have all my original teeth (just three lifetime cavities), 85% of my hair and am not fat.

Best I got.  I'd prolly fail at my age any sort of military requirement as I should.

Could probably pass both, but I’d definitely need to work on the pull-ups. Though it does say untimed. 🤔

That's a 3 mph pace; I do that currently with a 45 pound ruck pack for maybe 2 miles of fairly flat terrain.  Also I'm not sure what "full Ranger gear" is but I breathe out of my neck so any swimming requirements are a no-go for me.  Actually breathing out of my neck by itself is prolly a no-go, although it isn't listed.  😜

I missed the 65lbs part. Also, not sure what full ranger gear is, so I’m guessing it’s heavier than sh!t.

I like the "untimed" part on the swimming; do they have the following convo?

Ranger 1:  Hey, he's been under water for 17 minutes, should we get him?

Ranger 2:  No, it's untimed!  :o

I saw that for the pull-ups and thought- hey, I could probably bang out 1 every half hour until I hit 6.

I could complete the physical tests, any of them.  I could not pass the medical physical.  I have an artificial knee, an artificial hip, a plate holding my pelvis together, multiple plates and pins in my dominant hand forearm and dental issues.

Very cool. Respect.

However I'm kinda sure the question was could you do it now, as in 2023.

You can do 5 miles in 40 mins with an artificial knee, hip and pelvis plate?

Yes.  What I can't do is bend my right knee to greater than a 100 degree angle.  Also the pronation and supination of my right wrist is markedly less than it should be.

It makes me appreciate my 7th grade daughter's distance running, she can do all the running but the Army Ranger.  I'm not totally sure she couldn't do that two mile time now since she hasn't done a 2 mile distance since the fall but has vastly improved her mile time since.

They would probably still make you do the pull-ups. :dunno:

I might be able to push it to do the Army stuff, I work out alot, but still dont think I'd make it

I had my wisdom teeth removed though does that disqualify me?

the eye one is weird

with or without corrective lenses, why even have it

The push-ups and sit-ups seem easily doable. Running 2 miles in 17 minutes doesn't. Heck, running 1 mile in under 9 minutes is pushing it... I couldn't make 2.   And I jog every few days.

I average 5 miles a day and I do it in an hour or a little less, I feel like in a month I might be able to do a 9 min mile if I focus more on short distance, and then I am close

I used to run 5 min miles in HS like 50 years ago, and my stamina is far better now according to your mom

Interesting the Army changes regulations so drastically for under 21 vs older than 22 ... as if men are already downhill by 22.

Had to do 2 1/2 miles in 15 minutes BEFORE soccer practice in high school. That was 35 years ago
