The Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have a plan to clear away dead and dying trees, specifically those infested with beetles and dying as a result, as well as clearing away overgrowth of brush. They want to do this for between 2,500 and 20,000 acres of forest, where there are an estimates 127 million dead and dying trees, from 35 California counties, from Siskiyou to Santa Barbara. Compare that to the 2018 fires which destroyed 100,000 acres of forest — we could have saved 80% of that (or more) through proper land management. This was reported last year by Capital Public Radio: Feds Want To Remove Millions Of Dead And Dying Trees From California’s Forests — Capital Public Radio California, on the other hand, likes letting things burn. While the Governor pinned the December 2017 fires on climate change, the actual experts who know what they heck they are doing when it comes to forest fires, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) pin the blame squarely on shrubbery, and live and dead vegetation, which are easily ignitable fuel sources: How Regulations Made California's Fires Worse — American Thinker California has enacted — as a result of heavy lobbying by the Sierra Club, and it’s inner circle, the John Muir Society — laws that heavily restrict fire-preventing measures as logging, removal of dead trees, and clearing of dry underbrush. Without strong action, the Shot Hole Borer Beetle, which is a fungus-farming beetle, is set to kill as many as 2/5ths of the trees in the Los Angeles area: The shot hole borer beetle could kill 38% of all trees in the L.A. region — L.A. Times [paywalled; article metering] The disease it causes is called “Fusarium dieback”.
