Goodbye Ty Cobb, Hello Josh Gibson

Recommended Posts

Negro League stats have officially been combined with MLB stats resulting in some major changes to the record book.  Josh Gibson is now considered the all time Batting Average leader moving Ty Cobb to the second highest Batting Average of all time.  There's many other changes.

Me neither except I believe the Negro League's talent level was every bit as good as MLB and probably better.

Also, MLB sports trivia just became very confusing.

That is true for sure about trivia...

The talent was probably just as good, but the overall was probably not as good...  I mean, look at Gibson's career stats:  653 games played and only 11 career strikeouts?  That just doesn't seem logical or possible...

I probably would have passed on combing them. Too many variables, particularly record keeping.

Also, Baseball and Landis shouldn't get to combine them and try to smear the stain that was segregation. There is no band-aid that allows you to pretend that it didn't happen.  Own it and do what everyone else does when they screw up---work to be better.

I personally think their stats should count as 2/3 of MLB players. ;)

That’s right. That’s a slavery joke.

Does Pete Rose still hold the record for the most hits, but still not in the HOF.

What does BWJ need to do to surpass Honus Wagner as the greatest shortstop of all time?

Only until they incorporate the Japanese League records.

Kind of stupid.  Even in today's MLB the best pitchers are non black players.  There has been what, one great/very good black pitcher in the last 40 years (Gooden)?

This is my take.  I personally am fine combining the records.

But I can see MLB using this as a way to hide the past from future fans.  That I would truly be upset about.

It’s absolutely stupid. They kept score themselves in unofficial games. You know like my Sunday league. When in doubt. It’s a hit.

these stats are the equivalent of 1880s mlb

Dumb.  But no one gives a fock anymore.

Cant complain about it being “whitewashing” either, as that word has been canceled.

Gooden was awesome and let drugs ruin him.  The main one that jumped to mind for me was Bob Gibson.  Josh Gibson deserves the HOF honor he has, but we can't rewrite history to put those players in MLB and know what would have happened.  MLB wants to expand their appeal to the black community and has for years.  I don't think this will matter and people will view those records with asterisks or still differentiate between the two.  I'm trying to think of the top black SP prospects from the recent past.  David Price, Dewon Brazleton, CC Sabathia, Brien Taylor came to mind.  Taylor ruined his arm in a bar fight, Brazleton never panned out, Price was good for awhile, Sabathia had a nice career.  What's funny is top 10 black SP prospects from the past 35 years or so would have to include Pat Mahomes.  He was ranked the top RHP prospect in baseball by a few publications in 1991 I think it was.

Records have been in tatters for years what with designated hitters, live ball era, and steroids.

I always say the baseball fields themselves make records especially HR records meaningless. Unlike other sports, baseball fields aren't uniform outside the infield.

Well the Green monster is a joke.  How that can be a major league park is beyond comprehension.  Also some hitters get short porches like in Yankee Stadium and some play in massive pastures so yes, I agree with you there.

As good as Jeff Bagwell was, his numbers were drained so much by the Astrodome.

In other words, very few really good black pitchers.  Those negro league hitting stats would be waaaaay down if they had to face MLB pitching.
