BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Chris Martin on the 15-day injury list Wednesday because of anxiety.

The 38-year-old Martin told the team about his anxiety over the weekend.

The move was retroactive to Sunday. Martin last pitched on May 30 against Detroit, giving up four hits, including two home runs, and three earned runs in an inning of work. He has a 4.22 ERA in 21 appearances this season.

"With being respectful of the situation, he felt like it was manifesting in some physical ways that were keeping him from competing at the level that he's used to in terms of fatigue and energy and recovery and sleep and some of those types of things," Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said.

Breslow believes the time on the IL will help Martin return to the roster at full health.

"We'll make sure that it's sufficient," he said. "I think a couple of things that are important to get across, I think that we should applaud Chris' willingness to speak up and confront this challenge head on. As an organization, we fully support that and have a bunch of resources here including the mental health program that's intended to help players and staff address situations like this."

A former major league pitcher, Breslow said leagues and teams across sports have done a good job of destigmatizing these types of situations.

"I do think that teams now are exhausting resources on building out mental health and behavioral health programs that are maybe a little bit different than the traditional mental skills sports psychology domains that teams had spent time with in the past," he said. "Mental health is a really, really important piece of not just athlete well-being but people well-being. It's critical."

Breslow said the demands of a baseball season -- the demands of a season in any sport, really -- can at times be overwhelming and it's important for everyone to have the needed resources in place.

Martin has a 3.42 ERA in 345 career games spanning 11 years with the Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and the Red Sox. He spent the past two seasons with Boston.

To fill Martin's spot on the roster, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Zack Kelly from Triple-A Worcester.

15 day mind you and not 10 day

Give me a focking break. What pro sports athlete doesn't have anxiety at some point?

Dude clearly needs MORE MEDICATION! Keep filling those big pharma coffers.

Why don’t they just say he has a strained arm or whatever like they used to?

IKR?  I'd have kept the anxiety on the down low.  Opposing crowds are going to ride him mercilessly going forward.  :dunno:

This is where we're at as a society. A grown ass man can't work because of anxiety. Cut his snowflake ass.

We all have anxiety, Man up and deal with it.

Josh Hamilton never went on the DL for being crazy.

You should look into self awareness. Maybe that can answer your questions about yourself.

Once you all can make it to the show you can then be critical, until then go back to talking about how you pulled hammy in your rec softball game 😂

Why is everyone so soft? One of my employees a grown man in his 40s said he lost sleep because I was mean to him over email and didn't appreciate it.

We only have to come into the office one day a week and I have to fight with half my team to get them to come into the office. I don't like it but one day is more than fair imo.

I have people saying they can't come in because of anxiety.

Dude broke down crying cause his wife's leaving him. This is a little understandable

People complain their team leader is mean to them.

Wtf happened?

After Gloria left I told my boss that I needed a few weeks off with pay to process my feelings and work through my anxiety. He said “It’s a sporting goods store TJ, the shelves aren’t going to stock themselves! Get back to work you fat fock!” Ironically that made me cry during my shift and he sent me home. So I got an afternoon out of it at least.

I can be fairly easy on this.   Mental illness is real.  But why do suicides go up?   We are dealing with it like never before.   Asking grown men to break down.  Yet more suicides.  Why?   Every case is different.    But in general.

I’m not trying to puff myself up by claiming a pro athlete is soft for being on the DL for mental health. That’s false bravado.

Two autistic kids including one in current crisis ain’t a walk down the yellow brick road, but I’d have called you out for trying to pretend you’re tough because you think you can deny the existence of mental illness as debilitating, even if they were doing fine atm.

sorry to hear. that’s unfortunate.

I am also sorry that I feel anxiety is not a mental illness, more of an excuse/crutch used by younger people.

One big reason is the internet. Easy to search ways to do it. If the internet existed in the 80s, I would have not made it to 18 years old

Thanks for what appears to be sincere wishes. I got lots of blessings so I accept that burden.

If the internet existed in the 80s (it did, actually), many more might have been saved.

I don’t think they are allowed to be misleading on injury reports now…. Hasn’t the NFL cracked down on that recently?

Kids and especially adults should be able to delete social media if it is making them feel a certain way.  But nah, thats too tough for people to do.  No real personal responsibility or will power.
