Do you go to your state fair?

It’s a big thing here in Iowa. You get all sorts of BS on a stick and you can see some cow made out of butter but other than that I guess I’m not sure what the appeal is unless good act comes through.

Do you guys go to your own state fair? If so, is there a reason you do?

I went to the Pennsylvania state fair about 8-9 years ago. Kind of a rip off, but the pig races were fun.  Mrs. MDC placed.

Last one i attended was the Minnesota State Fair maybe 40 yeasr ago.  I went because I wanted to attend a Peter Paul & Mary concert with Pete Seeger.  Show was cancelled due to electrical problems, no amplification.  Regardless first Mary, and then pete came out to sing one song with no speakers.  They sang to 10,000 folks.  I was able to hear them pretty good.  I remember enjoying the side show barkers on the way in and out.  I saw Angie Dickinson walking around.  She looked good for a woman her age.

Last one I went was forty years ago at the Louisiana State Fair. OZZY and Blue Oyster Cult played that night. Qreat show. Was when Ozzy was on his Speak Of The Devil tour and Blue Oyster Cult was on the Godzilla tour.

Yes.  The MN State Fair is the best one in the country.

We make a point to avoid the two weekends, though.  It is tough to navigate 250,000+ people those days.

Haven’t been in 7 years, but it was tradition when the kids were young.  They loved seeing the cattle, horses, hogs and sheep.

I knew a guy that was banned from the iowa state fair for life. He saw a farmer swatting at pigs with a whip to get them off the pig truck and went ballistic. Had to be escorted from the fair. All for something that happens 1000s of times a day all over the US.

I used to go when my kids were younger, but I dont even know if Michigan does one anymore. The old fairgrounds were at 8 mile and Woodward @Voltaire can tell you about the crowd/neighborhood there and why most suburbanites stopped going.

Our family tradition growing up was the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We'd check out the livestock show in the arena and then head over to the Astrodome for the rodeo and performances. 

I wish I had a list of all the performers we saw over the years, but I know they included Lee Greenwood, Glen Campbell, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Wayne Newton, Buck Owens, Roy Clark and focking Sonny and Cher. 

Cher had a little closet out on stage, and she'd go in there to change between songs. I remember thinking, "Man, she's naked in there with all these people watching!"

I wish my parents had taken us to see Elvis when he was there in 1970 and 1974.

We don't have a "state fair"  we have a ton of them in different cities.
