Democrats lash out at 'misinformed' Teamsters as union makes landmark non-endorsement

Several Democrats responded overnight to news that the Teamsters, under General President Sean O’Brien, decided against issuing a presidential endorsement.

"Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before big business," O’Brien said in a statement.

Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass. who, like O'Brien, hails from the Boston area, called former President Trump the "most anti-labor president we have ever had."

"It’s clear that these workers are misinformed or uninformed about Trump’s record on labor," McGovern told the Washington Times. "His allegiance isn’t toward working people."                 

McGovern, the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, said it is obvious that Trump supports "rich people" over the working class.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris.

It’s the first time in nearly three decades that the union has not endorsed a presidential candidate.

Ahead of the decision, the Teamsters shared internal data showing that a majority of members supported Trump over Harris. According to an electronic member poll that was initiated after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, about 60% of members believed the union should endorse Trump while 34% supported Harris. About 6% said they supported another candidate.

“It’s a great honor. They’re not going to endorse the Democrats. That’s a big thing,” Trump said during a campaign stop in New York City on Wednesday. “Democrats automatically have the Teamsters. They took a vote, and I guess I was at 60% or more, and that’s a great honor.”

Harris met with Teamsters leaders on Monday. O’Brien had a prime-time speaking slot at this summer’s Republican National Convention but did not appear at the Democratic convention the following month.

The Teamsters, which represents truck drivers, freight workers and other workers, is the last major labor union to announce a presidential endorsement. The nation’s other major labor organizations, including the American Federation of Teachers and the United Auto Workers, have backed Harris.

The last time the Teamsters sat out a presidential election was 1996. It endorsed Democratic nominees in the ensuing six elections, including Trump’s opponents Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020. The union last backed a Republican presidential candidate in 1988, with an endorsement of George H.W. Bush.

CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris.

Before Biden dropped out of the race, Teamsters officials had suggested to various stakeholders that the union could remain politically neutral this cycle for the first time in decades.

This reminds me of when @The Real timschochet posts  support of transing the children by the APA and AMA, and concludes that the vast majority of doctors support it.  Uh, no.  The political, lobbying organization supports it, not necessarily the doctors.  In this case, the political/lobbying arm of the Teamsters, in bed with the Democrats for decades, decided to eschew the overwhelming support of Trump by it's constituents with a "we're taking our ball and going home" stance.

I wouldn't exactly call that "against the grain."  See the above discussion -- this in no way means that the actual Teamsters in those states support Harris.

Agreed.  What makes more sense is a bunch of blue collar workers who polled 60%/34% Trump/Harris, polled for Harris in the states listed.  And not only did so, but did so at higher than a 60/34 clip.  Because the national folks didn't feel like 60/34 was enough to make a call, so that wasn't enough.

The article kind of buried the reason they did not make an endorsement:

So with the almost 2-1 of their members that voted supporting Trump over Harris they choose as a union not to endorse anyone.  My guess is they will commission another poll and the results will flip so they can fall in line and endorse a candidate who was born into a middle class family.
