Thinking of becoming a Hat guy

Recommended Posts

Help me pick out one or two from this site.

Outback Western Hat Collection - Outback Trading Company – OutbackTrading.com

Mostly i am thinking about this so that my wife and daughter can have something to give me as gifts.  they have already exhausted the possibility of ties and socks so this will give them something else to get.

That’s a really tough one without knowing your style. Not all hats look good on people.

I’m a big hat guy but baseball hats. I wear a hat every day. I have a bunch of them.

My grandpa always for an ascot cap and I thought it was really cool. I can’t pull it off now and hipsters ruined them.

Probably going for a mountain man, river running, hermit/hillbilly look.  Not sure yet.  Definitely not Indiana Jones or Billy Jack, and the baseball cap thing is not for me.

Just please don’t do something d0uchey like a bowler hat or fedora, unless you can really, truly pull it off. Seen too many middle aged men embarrass themselves with this.

Now every once in a while some guy pulls it off (usually they’re black) and that’s pretty cool, but the hit rate’s gotta be under 10%

I ride horses very seldom.  I do ski, hunt, fish, and kayak and raft.  White hair and beard and now that I am retired I am pretty much in jeans.  I do not have any cowboy boots.  Maybe that all helps suggestions, I don't know.

I wear these types of hats all the time, I've got 5 of them.  Golfing, hiking, yard work.  They're the best for protection from the AZ sun.

Three of them are cloth with mesh tops which are my summer hats.  One is a silly-wide brim Cardinals hat that my wife won't let me wear in public; it's my yard work hat because it provides the most protection.

The other two are nicer:  one is an Akubra wool hat from a sales incentive trip in Sydney.  The other is a leather floppy hat I got last year from a leather store in Jerome, AZ.  I wore that hiking today.

I'd be concerned about the Wagga Wagga, living in Colorado, because it says it isn't waterproof.  My leather hat is, although I'm overdue to treat it.

As such, I'd suggest oilskin.  There are plenty of options.  I'd go with one of the standard ones, but if you get multiple,  I'm a bit intrigued by the Kodiak mesh:

https://www.outbacktrading.com/collections/hats/products/1472-kodiak-with-mesh-oilskin-hat

It looks better on the cowboy dood's head than standalone.  Gets 4.9 reviews.  It would be more of a summer hat for you.  Claims to be waterproof (maybe not totally in the mesh area), but also allows air flow.

Good luck.  🤠

Good input.  My hat is likely to get both sweaty and wet.

Of course I wear them. What do you consider proper etiquette though?

Run over to an Ace hardware.  They carry Turner hats.  Not expensive and varying styles.

That is how I found the site to begin with.  I was minding my own business and that site kept popping up.  I also get the Revolve site, a ladies cothing site.  I don't mind that so much as usually it pops up with a very hot mulato chick in a semi-transparent white dress.

I was favoring the Waga Waga, but do I really want to look like Bunny Bastatrds?

I’ve yet to meet a woman that I didn’t make her want to be a panty dropper. And on top of that, I was voted best dressed my senior year of high school. You do.🤠

The pressure of living up to that sort of legacy would be too much for me.

I feel like something like this might suit you well

Maybe were I a pimp in New Orleans in the 1930's.  Its a bit too peacocking for me now at my age.  Also, what is a Vegan sweatband?  Do Vegans have different sweat requirements than carnivores like me?

Those Stetsons get pretty pricey.  I did notice one that reminds me a bit of the hat Billy Jack wore.  https://stetson.com/collections/hats-fedora-felt/products/folklore-flat-brim-hat-black  Maybe I could rock that as a change of pace hat but I think my primary hat should be something a bit less  Tom Laughlin.

Stetson had two manufacturing facilities, one in Texas and one here in my hometown.  They've closed the factory production here but left the retail space.  A lot of big time folks have made stops through town to pick one up.

I kind of like newsboy style and would probably wear one of those, but it's just as easy to throw on a ballcap and they don't cost as much.

:dunno:
