Bye Bye DEI

Recommended Posts

DEI is just another name for affirmative action. And it’s not going away. It will be back because both companies and society in general like the look of a racially inclusive society. There’s backlash right now against the idea but that won’t last.

It is your claim that minorities need the government for promotions because they are incapable of earning it on their merits?

No it's not.  It's another name for "racism".  It is LITERALLY racism against non-minority groups.

How this is even tolerated is simply absurd.  If a white person did or say the same stuff these DEI groups are doing the DOJ would have come after them and thrown them all in jail.  DEI is LITERAL racism.  And that is undeniable, irrefutable and undebatable.  It's as true as water being wet.

Society DOES NOT like it.  You literally just lost an election over it.

That seems pretty cut and dried.

He is 100 percent right. It will absolutely come back. It will be rebranded the next time the dems take power and they will insist it is something good. I have seen the process of DEI first hand as a recruiter.  Next rebrand will be something that marginally includes white people so they can pass it off as not what it is. Racist.

That's what the left wants them to believe. That they aren't smart enough, competent enough, good enough to meet necessary standards. So they lower standards. It's insidious.

Nope. It is my claim that there is inherent societal discrimination against minorities, and that programs like Affirmative Action and DEI fight back against it in a very small way. It doesn’t provide true equal opportunity but it helps a little.

It’s really as simple as this.  The majority of Americans despise it, and their voices vouldn’t have been any clearer in the recent election.  DEI is DEAD.  And America will be far better off without all that racist nonsense.  Maybe we can now realize MLK’s dream - to judge people not by the color of their skin, but the content of their character.

May I ask. Do you have inside insight into what DEI actually does and how it is implemented or is it just what you read in the media? I am not asking to be an assshole. I am asking because I would like to know if you are in the weeds on this issue or you are just an arm chair qb.

I have had a hiring manager at a well known tech company tell me to my face. "we are not hiring people who look like you this quarter for these roles.. Find me women and people of color."  Imagine saying that to ANYONE other than a straight white dude and thinking that would be ok. DEI is used for 2 things. racism and window dressing. If you look at the DEI related jobs on Linkedin. They are ALL people of color and lgbtq. So it gives tech companies cover when asked about the amount of minorities they have. We have an entire DEI department...that makes up 100 percent of our minority workers.

I can’t speak to the specifics of your company. What you described sounds unfair. Many instances of DEI, and affirmative action before it, have been unfair. As a general rule I would like to see a color blind, merit based society. I believe that most people would like to see that.

But- white privilege is not a fantasy. It exists, I’ve enjoyed it my entire life, so have you, so have most of the folks in this forum. I don’t feel guilty about it. I simply want everyone to have the same opportunities I have had. The fact is that minorities as a general rule do not. It is not and has never been an even playing field. Thats why I don’t mind the idea of giving them a helping hand. I would like for society to accomplish that without being unfair or unjust to anyone. I don’t know if there is a way to accomplish this. If it turns out there isn’t, then I suppose I’m against DEI and Affirmative Action. Still I think we need to do something to make things more fair. That’s the most honest answer I can give you.

I have experienced white privilege as well, and it had nothing to do with money, it was all about my skin being white. It's been subtle mostly, but it's there. I know for an absolute fact I've gotten at least one promotion that would never have been granted if I wasn't white. Yes, my boss was a racist POS, but there are still plenty of those folks out there. You and I have had this conversation before, when you admitted that being a white man in China granted you privileges that would have never been afforded a black person. And yes, I understand the US isn't China, but let's not pretend some of the same sentiments aren't there.

I believe you, and that hiring manager should be focking fired immediately. For being stupid, if nothing else. I work for a very diverse, large company. There has NEVER to my knowledge been any sort of quota or mandate about diversity hiring. I have hired plenty of minorities because they were the most deserving applicants. I've hired plenty of white people over minorities for the same reason. If I said something that stupid I'd deservedly be fired tomorrow.

I mentioned to my boss at the RPO that the hiring manager made me feel uncomfortable. 2 weeks later I was rotated out of that company and replaced by a Latino. It was not a firing because I rotated straight another contract within my staffing org but they def replaced me because of the question.  I have hired TONS of diverse candidates over the years because they were the best person for the job. That being said I have been a contractor on an off for years and that has seen me go into a lot of different orgs on what is called an RPO, Recruitment Process Outsourcing. In the era of DEI have seen a lot of crazy things that I would have previously considered racist. I have been told in forced training that the old way of being colorblind is NOT acceptable. It is not good enough to be passive. If I am not actively helping people of color it is racist. As a recruiter I have had to turn down quite a few white males based not on their skills and background but what the color of their skin is or what their gender is.  It sucks but I think it is pervasive based on my experience in the industry.

Of course you do. You WANT to believe that is not what DEI is about. That may NOT be what DEI is about in the classroom setting but in the real world, trust me when I say,  that is absolutely how it is applied. Especially to tech companies. I have mentioned this experience many times in the past. You want me to really blow your fuckingg mind? It was not just that she told me she was not hiring people that look like you. She pointed at her face, and pointed at her skin. Just to drive home the fact of what she was saying. Then I had to reject all the white male candidates that were good fits. So there was NO mistake as to what just happened.  Is that graphic enough?  Did she also need to call me a cracker asss cracker in order for you to believe (she did not but that would have at least made me laugh)

Sue them? You think in the era of DEI/Metoo/Believeallwomen a straight white male is going to be able to win a lawsuit on something that comes down to he said/she said over a zoom call?  I just sucked it up like a big boy and moved on to the next contract that turned out to be even more lucrative for me. You can believe what you want because it makes you feel better inside. Just know. You are wrong. I AM in the weeds and I am telling you the practical application of DEI ends up as a form of racisim that they are so comfortable with, saying something like that to me was not even viewed as out of the norm or even a problem. Just policy. It was not JUST them. It is usually not said in the same way I gave an example of. It is usually done like this. I submit people for the hiring manager to review and then they just reject all the white males. Then after that happens 2-3 times you just do not waste your time anymore trying to even submit them. THAT way they do not have to come right out and saaaaaay they are being racist. It is on YOU to make that assumption. Plausible deniability.

Think I am full of shitt? Don't believe me? I encourage you to look into how DEI is used in practical application. I HOPE you look into it more. The more people that see this is BS the better.  I hope you talk to some white male corporate recruiters and ask them to tell you the stories they have about DEI. How it is used. Because I 100 percent stand by what I have said. It was a lived experience. Not just something someone is making up for shitts and giggles to make you feel bad about DEI. DEI is racism rebranded under the cover of a cool little acronym. The shitt of it is that even if it is killed off NOW, it will creep back into society as soon as democrats regain power in 4-8 years. New name, same management. Something like EID. They will change it just enough to be different but not enough that people who are looking for it can't find it

Ask a poor white kid from the trailer park about his white privilege.  There are no jobs in those parts of the country.  Meanwhile a person of color who lives in a big metro area can walk a quarter mile in any direction and gather 100s of applications. Many looking to hire a POC.  Many of those businesses owned by a POC.

You live in fantasy land.  You are a thoroughbred progressive.   The one thread I believe started by mooney had polling.  Less blacks and latinos as a % think they are wronged compared to white liberals chanting those people are wronged.  It says it all.  You are white knighting.  But hey dont listen to the very people you are pretending to try and help.  That would be stupid.

Yes, white privilege exists in China. Parents like the white German who looks the part but speaks with a German accent an makes basic grammar errors over black Americans. Africans have it worse. My Liberian friend, with his heavy Liberian accent, had to claim that he was from Kentucky.

In the US though, what an absurd canard. I hope the culture shift on the issue will take hold, hopefully we see laws that make it so.

Agree, and I think it makes sense for companies to have diversity initiatives.  But IMO they don’t need entire departments for it, it should just be part of HR.

No it shouldn’t, that’s why HR should incorporate diversity initiatives.  If an entire department or something is all the same race then there was probably some racism involved in the hiring, even if unintentional.
