It's almost surreal they go so overboard on this stuff and fail to realize they are simply making fools of themselves doing so.

Trump admires what Putin did. Putin used Russia's full might to annex valuable territory. Trump is looking for opportunities to do the same. In the vein that presidents should always look to advance the well being of the nation - even at the cost of other nations - it makes sense. Canada is resource rich and is valuable land. However, if the intent would be to perform a hostile takeover of an allied nation, that would likely not have the desired effect of net positive standing of the US and any action taken toward such a goal would be undone by the next president. Another option is mad man diplomacy, but Trump is neither smart enough to feign such a move with a larger goal in mind nor would his ego allow himself to be purposely perceived as crazy. So we are left with a dummy trying to cosplay what he thinks is good leadership, but without the necessary insight to understand the nuances of each situation.
