Does Anyone Still Have a "Home" Phone?

Recommended Posts

I haven't had a "home" phone in about 7 years. Cell phone only. Just wondering why anyone still does any more. Well, maybe if you have a teenage daughter in the house......

Any other reasons?

I still have a home phone b/c I need one line for the gatehouse to call us when we have guests and to buzz people into my building.

Next time Mrs. DaveBG and I re-up on our cell phones I'm getting a family plan w/an extra line just for this purpose.

I have a home line and a home fax line for my office....like douchebg, we live in a gated community as well, and people have to be buzzed in. Also...cell reception sucks in Las Vegas :music_guitarred:

With our land line and thru the magic of technology, we have phones distributed throughout the house, and we can pick up the nearest one should someone call. Also, someone can call our family, and not one specific person, and anyone who is home can answer. Also, I have a phone and fax line for work. Also, my cell reception sucks in my home office.

There may be more.

I don't. But my parents are still very old-fashioned. They have the $10/month cell phone plan and keep it only for emergencies. They use the home line quite often.

I need some form of circuit from AT&T for my DSL anyway. So its just a couple of more bucks to provide dial tone to the phone after that.

no, so i dont have to try and justify it

would be nice though for a couple reasons only:

1. being in the phone book

i guess that's about the only reason really, and maybe 911 calling so they know where you are in case you call if someone is breaking into your house or something

For my needs, adding a line to a family plan for another $10 per month is going to be WAAAAY cheaper.

As for reliability, my cell reception is pretty good where I live. However, back when I lived in Hoboken Verizon land lines were notoriously focked up.

No, I don't. But if I DID, the reason would be (and was) - Tivo. And only if you didn't have broadband at home. - Which I don't.

1) Why would you want to be in the phone book? Does anyone even use them anymore, except to order a pizza and call a locksmith (not necessarily in that order.)

2) Step 1: Move to new town. Step 2: Find number for local police dept. Step 3: Save said number in the contacts of your cell phone. Step 4: Dial when needed. Step 5: Rinse, repeat.

well, like people tried tracking me down for my high school reunion this year. With as many people that know me and have my address, they still tried to send it to my mom's house and never got to me. And wedding invitations when people want to look you up and mail you an invitation.

As for the work I am in though, it's kind of nice not being in the phone book though i agree. i'd be getting fockin work calls all hours of the day

The looking up the number is a nice idea, but when you call 911 from a land line they can automatically see where you are calling from, that's not the case with the cell and you don't have as fast or a response time.

Cell-911 service sucks, you never know where your call is going to go to.

A # of reasons actually

1. I have vonage and it provides free nationwide long distance and free calling to Canada where my sexy SIL lives. (Used to be 34 D but after baby 34 B at best) We can also call like 7 european nations for free all for about $30.00 per.

2. My cell reception in my house is actually quite poor. It's a densely populated area and for whatever reason, cells just don't want to work very well in here and it doesn't seem to matter what the phone is or the carrier. I believe they used sheets of lead for insulation in the original build.

3. Having more than one option for my wife to make a phone call in an emergency is priceless. Maybe a prowler is in the house or there's a fire and she can't get to where the cell might be, perhaps those extra cordless phones around may help. That could be a reach but it's conceivable.

my sis (34b), has both.

she needs the home land line so if she has to dial 911, they can find her. i guess it doesnt work too well with a cell. and since she has little kids at home...., if something were to ever happen

Don't ll cell phones have GPS device in them?

Mine does and I have had it for gawd, eons.

I can only asumme the newer ones also contain these little bits of technology that tell the phone carrier (and thusly 911 emergency response personelle) where you are located exactly in the world?

Just curous.

But I also have a land line.

Can't quite make the commitment to just a cell.

Not only that but land line = personal, cell = business.

Mostly.

You need a landline for Tivo? Never had it. I have a dvr that just goes through my cable company.

We just got rid of our home phone last Monday. Switched the DSL to a cable modem and eliminated a $80 Verizon bill each month. Only people that called the home phone were solicitors or people that already had our cell numbers.

I can't stand the crappy audio quality of cell phones. DTV and TIVO need the land line.

DTV and TIVO need the land line.

Not sure about TIVO, but the statement about DTV is false. I have HD DVR with DTV and the phone line is only needed by DTV to spy on your tv habits. Don't let them tell you otherwise because you don't need it for PPV.

Vonage for my business line

You might want to explore other options.

They're not going to make it. Oh, and write that down.

I wasn't planning to get a home phone, but the place I'm moving to is right up against a hill and cell reception is bad on my street. From what I understand, about 1/2 of the tenants in the bldg get cell reception & 1/2 do not.

Aside from that, it is a security bldg and a home phone is needed in order to buzz guests into the entry door.

So yes, I have a home phone.

I've still got a "home" phone, but it's a comp. in the living situation that I'm in. I'd probably still pay the $19.99 that it costs for basic service from Qwest.

I don't think that the phones are being built with a "GPS" system in them, but use a tracking system based on "pings". I haven't researched this, but I believe "pings" are the electronic signal sent to from the phone to the towers/satellites that transmit the calls. So when you place a 911 call, and they are able to locate you, they are actually only locating an area that you might be in.

Any TIVO made in the last 3 years (like my Series 2 dual tuner which can tape 2 NFL games at once :overhead: ) doesn't need a phone line if you have an Internet connection. Also, with the Internet connection you can download movies from Amazon onto your TIVO, play CBS Sportsline fantasy football from your couch, tell your TIVO to record a show from any computer connected to the Internet, etc.

I have a home phone -- that way someone can find me if my cell phone breaks - don't know about you all, but I have had 2 of them die on me just from getting wet. It is also nice to have 2 ways to call if the power goes out or there is some other kind of emergency.

If you don't want people with scanners to pick up your phone conversations, stick with land line.

Aside from the cell reception I agree with Jerry.
