I've been trying to tell anyone who would listen that Toto's Steve Lukather is the best guitarist of all-time, but because his name isn't Clapton, Van Halen, or Hendrix, no one would buy it.

 

Well, 40 million people voted and Lukather was named rock music's all-time greatest guitarist.

No one's saying that Toto is better than Zepellin. Relax people. It's just their guitarists.

 

Worldwide, Luke was voted the best. Keep in mind that bands that are globally successful (Toto is huge in Europe and the Middle East), get more love than nationally famous guys. I'm prett sure that Stevie Ray Vaughn was only big in the US. If I'm not mistaken, Bon Jovi is also big worldide, which explains Sambora's good showing.

To be fair, Rosanna and Africa represent a very small sample of Toto's body of work. It would be like saying Jump and When It's Love represent Eddie Van Halen.

Well, I don't think he was the best ever, either. The 40 m illion people in the poll do, but, liek I said, Toto has been huge in some countries for almost thirty years. I'm sure that's why he received so much support.

 

I was just happy to see him get teh respect he deserves. Saying he's better than Clapton is like saying Walter Peyton is better than Jim Brown. It's totally objective and there's no definitive test to ever find out. I'm pretty sure that you could line up Lukather, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc., and each one of them could do things the others couldn't.

 

I'm just happy to see him have his rightoeus place among the best in the world.

Steve was a session player before Toto and has great chops. His musical relavance next to a Clapton or a Hendrix or his buddy Brian May comes up lacking however. Some of the other players on the list changed music forever (like an Eddie Van Halen or Hendrix). I wish I had his chops, but if I did I wouldn't belong on anybodes "best" list until I made a musical statement to match the flash-fingered talent.

I saw Toto at a rock festival with Aerosmith, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Mothers Finest, REO Speedwagon (they were pretty good then) and other bands I can't remember, He may not be the best but that dude played his ass off, I wasn't expecting much and was impressed, this was in the late '70's.

I've seen him play a few times and he's a killer guitarist, no doubt about it. When one talks about being the greatest rock guitarist, one needs to factor in other things than just skill or virtuosity. Guitar players like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, Santana, and others made lasting footprints in rock history. I'm sorry Newbie, but Lukather will never be thought of as anything other than just a great guitar player. Those other guys mentionned will be thought of as rock gods forever. Being in Toto and doing session work isn't enough to be called the best rock guitarist of all time.

 

As far as defending this poll from this website, no way. Way too many huge discrepancies to give it legitimacy. Brian May and Lukater as numbers one and two make me think that some very like-minded people were driven to that poll, and skewed the result, or that website is somehow linked to a Toto site.
