Things you like about Obama

Recommended Posts

17k more troops in afghanistan

Taking responsibility and not afraid to take on challenges. He says he'll balance the budget and its something he should be judged on. I like that move quite a bit. If he doesn't balance the budget, then by his own accord, he failed. Takes balls to put that out there.

Closing of gitmo

His Q&A with the public

Adding the iraq war bill to our budget and not hiding it like bush

The bailout is a tricky one. I don't like all aspects of it, but i do like the dialogue he had with the public. I like how tried working with republicans and i like how he got it passed quickly into his presidency. Things i don't like include parts of the bill and the fact that he can't control pelosi and the rest of the democratic party. He can talk to republicans all he wants, but until he gets the dems to have meaningful conversation and have them work with republicans, he's not going down as a president who was bipartisan. Especially if the dems keep having secret meetings to prevent the republicans from knowing whats going into the bill.

I respect the fact that he stands behind what he says. Sure, when he said that the Jews are responsible for bad weather, that could have come across as a bit bigoted. But the news media didn't challenge him on it, and he certainly never had a chance to deny it, so I say he stuck with his opinion.

Good for him.

Like all the great leaders in American history, Obama is acting aggressively to try to solve a huge dilemma. And as with all of Amerca's risk-takers, he has a lot of skeptics. And he seems alright with that (another sign of great leadership).

Like aeveryone else here, I don't possess enough knowledge to accurately predict how everything will turn out. But it's nice to see someone willing to try to help instead of allowing things to 'play themselves out', which could result in a total economic collapse and have billions of people suffering. Proactive. Not reactive.

As with all Presidents (I liked Bush for the first couple years of his first term), I'll reserve my final judgement on him until we have a better idea of the results he gets. It wouldn't surprise me if I end up supporting someone else in four years, but at the same time, I'm hoping, for America's sake, that his results keep me in his corner.

I don't know if he said he'd balance the budget. I know fiscal responsibility and bringing the deficit under control were mentioned during the campaign, but actually balancing, can't remember. If he did say though, I'd have to judge if him more if he's bringing the deficit down, too much has occured since mid '08 until now that's made an actual balanced budget a stretch.

Closing of gitmo

Kind of meh, it wasn't gitmo that bothered me, but extreme ways the former administration went about the status of the prisoners. They're not convered by the Geneva Convention...oh and there not criminals either...they're completely new and we'll do whatever we want. Absolutely absurd.

confident, articulate, intelligent, inspirational.

if this recession is mostly a psychological thing, Obama's the perfect figure head to lead us out of it.

however, if this recession is truly about dollars and systemic failure, nice words and happy thoughts won't be enough.

Yet leaving 50,000 there until the end of 2011...

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/62930.html

WASHINGTON — Amid complaints from has own party that he's moving too slowly to end the war in Iraq, President Barack Obama will announce Friday that U.S. combat troops will be withdrawn by Aug. 31, 2010, but that as many as 50,000 Marines and soldiers would remain until the end of 2011.

Obama will announce his plans during a visit with troops at Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he'll also visit with Marines who are being deployed to Afghanistan, senior administration officials said.

As he moves to draw down the war in Iraq after six years and more than 4,200 U.S. dead, he's also moving to escalate the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

The 18-month timetable for withdrawing combat troops from Iraq is two months longer than he promised during his campaign. Aides who spoke on condition of anonymity to speak frankly said that military commanders wanted the extra time. "The president found that compelling," said one senior administration official.

The pace of the drawdown will be left to commanders and determined by events on the ground as well as politics in Washington. Although U.S. and Iraqi casualties have dropped sharply, and recent provincial elections were held without major incidents, it's not clear whether Iraq's rival factions and their militias have abandoned violence or are merely biding their time.

A key factor in the pace of the U.S. drawdown will be making sure that there are sufficient U.S. forces in Iraq to assure that national elections scheduled for December are peaceful, officials said. Another will be the speed with which Iraqi military and security forces gain the ability to maintain order without American help.

Under Obama's plan, a force of between 35,000 and 50,000 U.S. troops would remain in Iraq after Aug. 31, 2010, to train, equip and advise Iraqi forces, help protect withdrawing forces and work on counterterrorism. They'd remain until Dec. 31, 2011, the date on which the Bush administration agreed to withdraw all troops under a pact with Iraq.

That number, too, could depend on conditions in Iraq and on the need for additional U.S. troops in Afghanistan, where the Taliban have made significant gains, and where national elections also are scheduled.

The plan to leave as many as 50,000 troops in Iraq after August 2010 upset several top Democrats in Congress, who want far fewer troops left after the August date.

"I'm happy to listen to the secretary of defense and the president, but when they talk about 50,000, that's a little higher number than I had anticipated," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., before meeting with Obama at the White House.

Obama started reviewing options in mid-December, aides said, then "really began in earnest" after taking office. He met on Jan. 21 with top commanders, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates; Navy Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Army Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the U.S. Central Command; and Army Gen. Ray Odierno, the commander of U.S. troops in Iraq.

Things I like: That is one smoove brother. Seriously, I like the guy. He is intelligent, articulate, and the world veiw of him is positive. I also agree with him on a few social issues. I sorta / kinda like his just announced policy in regards to Iraq. I just hope the pull out is not too hastily done, but done correctly and safely while perserving the great things already done there.

I pretty much dislike everything else though. Especially his fiscal policies.

Like I've said before, I wouldn't mind Obama as President if we had a Repub congress.

Did he make that "balanced budget" claim on the campaign trail? If you look at what he is projecting now he will get nowhere close to a balanced budget, even using his rosy, Alice in Wonderland assumptions.

Did he campaign on getting out of Iraq, or did he campaign on "Leaving 1/3 of our troops in Iraq". I can't remember.

Yeah, because it would be very responsible of him to just yank everyone at one time. :pointstosky:

The other nitwit thought Bush's war ideas were great and we would have just continued to throw money away and lose lives over there. I'll take this option any day of the week.

Thanks for playing.

I just read a great book about the complete and utter failure of Bush's CPA administration that was running the Iraqi government between 03-04. Bush was a total failure. Thank God for General Petraeus.

Yeah, but we're one month removed from that eight year nightmare and no one's supposed to ever mention it again. It can only be about how bad Obama is now, as if Bush II (JM) would have been better for this country.

They just need to lay the groundwork for the 2012 election. It started before Obama even took office. Remember....for some people here this is a training round for domestic terrorism.

I get that you hated Bush, but I don't understand why you like Obama. His policies are anti-libertarian.

Anyway, I like that Obama is confident and well-spoken. I also like that he doesn't completely toe the party lines, i.e. education, a realistic Iraq troop withdrawal policy, etc. I do think he is trying to do too much too fast, and wish that he didn't feel the need to propose a new initiative seemingly every day. I think he has the potential to grow into a good president, and hope he takes a step back and remembers that this is a marathon, not a sprint. :dunno:

Good sense of humor.

That he's talked about the need for black fathers to be more responsible. It would be nice if his own family life could actually be an inspiration to some of those fathers.

Taking opportunities to say education should begin at home, emphasizing that parents should have an active role in the development of their kids. It's sad if the President saying that is what makes the difference, but it's better than no difference.
