Game of Thrones (no spoilers)

I understand splitting book 3 in 1/2 but  waiting 1 year to show the second half? It should be on right after BWE ends :wall:

yeah - but is there any significance to his rescuer saying, "Winter is Coming" as he helped him away? Is that a WinterFell phrase? or at the very least a "North" phrase? Is there some sort of "prodigal adopted son" angle going on with Theon and Winterfell/Starks/North?

If you'd read all the books you'd know the answer to this question. But since you haven't, I'm not allowed to say anything. :P

I'm pretty sure 2 seasons of GoT a year would cost HBO a fortune.

Just tell him -- it means every Stark will die a horrible death by the end of the first part of book 3. Enjoy and hope it didn't spoil things too much. Also Jaime dies of septic from his hand , one of Dany's Dragons roasts her out of fun, and a Giant goes and eats every person on the Nights Watch.

enjoy watching :ninja:

Actually Rob Stark does get pretty focked up

I think you're wrong on the second part. I  that I have a deeper understanding of the characters and what's going on. It's also fun to see if how they show it matches with how I pictured it in my head.

I don't think there is a wrong way to enjoy it.

I'm with TD Ryan. I don't think the show would be as enjoyable if I knew everything that was coming. It would be a different viewing experience and IMO not as good.

I'm sorry you guys all ruined it for yourselves :(

And I am sorry for people like yourself that don't want to bother reading a book that is MUCH better than the show itself.

I read lots of books, but not of the fantasy genre and not regarding shows I am currently watching.

But no need to get your panties in a twist, I was mostly joking. To each his own

IMO I don't think I could really enjoy watching it had I not read the books and knew the characters. Same way I liked watching LOTR's better after reading the books.

So far this season, I envy the book readers because I feel like I have to keep a notebook with diagrams of characters and whatnot. So much going on, the only thing I am having trouble with is names, but I usually recognize characters and their purpose and whatnot, just not their name.

I think Jaime should get a contraption like Merle in TWD to replace his hand. That would be BA, but I don't think they have duct-tape in Westeros.

If he was listening closely during Sunday's episode the question would likely be answered for him too. It was cryptic but it was there.

They've been saying "winter is coming" ever since Season One. I believe it primarily means that those white walker undead fellas from beyond the wall are fixing on storming the Seven Kingdoms.

I haven't read the books so no, these aren't spoilers, and yes, I know I'm probably wrong.

Small spoiler pertaining to "winter is coming";

Maybe this will be explained in the show maybe not; but winter actually is coming, literally. The lengths of seasons vary in Westeros. They have been enjoying an unusually long summer, for like a decade, but now winter IS coming.

I don't think the notion of "Winter is Coming" is a spoiler by any means. Their seasons aren't like ours. The seasons last for years at a time and Winter generally brings wars, dismay and possibly evil "stuff." Robert Baratheon's rule since he became king (previously Targaryans) has been part of a loooong multi-year summer. That included the Stark family not being a big part of the world - just chilling in Winterfell.

They haven't had a particularly long Winter in quite awhile. And this one was/is foreshadowed to be particularly long and hard because of everything that is happening now (and most notably the chilly 'gentlemen' with blue eyes). Also means Starks to the forefront because Winter is their time in the limelight. Nothing earth shattering there.

---------

Theon is handled very differently in the books.

Jaime losing his strong hand is a big deal because he is widely known as the best swordsman in all of Westeros. They haven't put much emphasis on that in the show. Brienne matched him (not beat) in the swordfight just before being interrupted due to Jaime's cockiness and underestimating her more than anything.

He still would have won out had other dudes not rolled up, even with his fatigue, hands tied, etc.

It may help non-readers to put the closed captioning/subtitles on. You get the name of who is speaking and other names they say.

Yeah, the seasons were explained a few times, but then again a lot of stuff gets lost in the mix of everything that is going on.

I think we possibly got a big foreshadow when Dany was in the the House of the Undying. The iron throne in a massacred building with tons of snow falling. That could of been metaphoric, but who knows. Something tells me that shortly after winter comes, the iron throne won't really matter much.

"Winter is coming" is meant more to say to be prepared, be ready, because everything isn't going to go your way. Ned Stark lived it, one way was to get Arya her "dancing lessons."

It can also be taken literally, which makes it a good motto...

I don't like that they're trying to make me empathize with Jaime. He tried to kill a little boy, but now he's concerned about his captor's honor and purity? :nono:

I dont think he wanted to kill Bran, it was just necessary. I dont think he cares about her honor or purity, i just think he grudgingly respects her, and knows she didnt deserve what she was getting. I bet that there isnt even a single saphire mined on Tarth :D I definately dont think he would have come to her rescue if he had known that it would lead to him losing a hand.

I may be wrong but i think ive read someplace (maybe this thread) that Martin tried to show that most of his characters werent totally good or totally bad. Even a sister f0cking basturd like Jamie has a few redeeming features.

Ned is probably as close to a "pure" character as there is - at least as far as adult characters - and we all know how he ended up.

Also, we recently met one of the most purely bad, many just don't know it yet. That's a teaser, not a spoiler. ;)

This is why I liked this series so much... I love that he took the time to explore why the characters are a certain way and gave them room to grow. Most people aren't entirely good or evil IRL either.

Correct. One of the great things about the series/Martin's writing.

i'm not following, are you refering to one of the boltons? Or perhaps maester qyburn an episode ago? As it plays out in the book series there probably isn't more of a cunningly evil character than baelish IMO

Ramsay. Even LittleFinger has motives for most of what he does. Evil, yes, but at least partially understandable. Ramsay is evil just for the sake of being evil.

I hope they change the Theon crap and it looks like they started to do that already. I thought the whole torturing Theon thing in the book got a little old and kind of dragged a bit.

I agree completely. Just nothing appealing about the storyline whatsoever.

And OK - can we just get to Danaery torching the Slaver Chief? I didn't read the books but I am dying for:

1. She gives the "biggest" dragon to SlaveAss. Dragon incinerates him as she explains that she's fluent in his language and understood everything.

2. She takes the slave army and tells them to either - return to your homes and loved ones or fight for me so that this never happens to anyone again.

3. She demands that SlaveAss's interpreter woman be forbidden to ever wear a shirt while on camera - the slaves are not the only things that need to be freed!

there may be more...

So that was thoroughly predictable yet equally enjoyable.

Still waiting on #3 but cool nonetheless.

There is much speculation about this... it seems very out of character for him. I'm hoping for a major plot twist-but so far the books haven't addressed it either.

I'm also wondering where the storyline with Pod is going...

Jon Snow's parents are probably Lyanna Stark and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen---in the books Ned finds Lyanna(after she'd been with Rhaegar for a year) in the tower of Joy and she makes him promise something, probably...hey take care of this baby and raise it as your own. Remember it was open season on Targaryen kids that day.
