tubby_mcgee 701 Posted September 5, 2012 It's my opinion...that gold and diamonds should have no real value. But...that's not the way it is. They are worth something...only because having gold or jewelry is a way to flaunt and say "Hey...look at what I've got." Don't tell me it's "for the look". If that was the case, people would be fine with zirconia or fake gold of some kind. Because people like to flaunt them shouldn't make them valuable. Here is what would make gold or diamond truly valuable, and not just on the surface: If a 1/4 ounce or flake or whatever would run your car for 5,000 10,000 etc miles, etc. Or if they would make land twice as productive. Or make it possible to..... In the grand scheme of things...if they disappeared from the face of the earth tomorrow.....nothing would really happen. Not a big deal. Land is valuable. Food is valuable. Building materials are valuable. Gold and diamonds? Meh. That being said, I paid about 6500 for the diamond on BlueNile.com and 1000 or so for the rings at a local jewelry store. Just because I think diamonds are silly....doesn't mean my wife does...so...I got her something she wanted and liked. IF you are searching....I'd say go with Blue Nile. southcarolina 166 Posted September 5, 2012 My wife told me " Reasonable ring, down payment on a house" I spent 1500 on the ring, we lived in an apartment for 6 months while our house was being built. Last good financial decision i ever made Bought a little starter home in a neighborhood in the best school district around that was extremely popular and growing like crazy. Had a five year plan and everything. Fifteen years later here we are, bursting at the seams. At least the property has appreciated LOL. But enough about me.... I mean it all boils down to what you can afford. Thirteen grand doesnt make you any more married than the wife and i are. But if you are both brain surgeons or mob lawyers or internet pr0n stars or something, then maybe 13 grand isnt a lot of money to you.

KSB2424 3,173 Posted September 5, 2012 Spent $7000. I think it's absolutely ridiculous but she likes it. Ditto. The way I looked at it is that its not a random peice of jewelry. This is something she wants to wear all the time for a long long time (hopefully ) so I bit the bullet and paid like $6500. Lukiley a family friend is a jeweler in town and it was appraised for 10K so I feel like I got a good deal. I think it was a platinum ring/setting like a 1.25 carats with good ratings and nice setting. She likes it, wears it almost every day, and her friends always compliments her even after we've been married for 6+ years. That was my limit though. Anthing more expensive or larger and it would've been to gaudy. There is happy medium in my opinon. You don't want to be cheap, but you don't want to be gaudy either. southcarolina 166 Posted September 5, 2012 A friend of mine had his fiance leave him over the price of her wedding ring. The ring she insisted he buy her was something like $6000. This was the early 90's and he was making low 30's in salary (I know because i worked with him and everyone got paid the same). Well she throws a big ol spoiled brat hissy fit, calls him all sorts of names and junk and says "If you dont love me enough to buy me that ring, i wont marry you." He says, "Go." Did i mention that the girl was a 24 year old high school graduate working as a cashier at K Mart at the time? So they break up, and he knocks up his next girlfriend, and they get engaged under the South Carolina Shotgun Wedding Provision of 1835.. She gets engaged to another KMart cashier. He gets a phonecall on the eve of his wedding from a very drunk her begging for him to come back, which he rebuffs. Best.Wedding.Gift.Evar.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,433 Posted September 5, 2012 Hey Nikki. How good are you at sifting through poop? This one seems right in your price range. http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/05/13680218-sri-lanka-cops-tourist-swallows-13600-diamond-at-gem-fair By NBC News staff and wire reportsCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Sri Lankan police arrested a Chinese tourist suspected of swallowing a diamond worth $13,600 on Wednesday at the island nation's biggest international gem and jewelry exhibition. Chow Cheng, 32, is believed to have swallowed the diamond as he inspected it at the exhibition, attended by buyers from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, India and Europe, police said. "His intention was to steal it," police spokesman Ajith Rohana told Reuters. "The x-ray shows the diamond is in his throat." The Associated Press reported that the diamond was 1.5 carats. Suresh Christopher Wijekoon, owner of the exhibition stall, said Chow had tried to switch the original diamond with a synthetic one.

Patriotsfatboy1 1,433 Posted September 5, 2012 Are you trying to say Nikki should swallow in order to get a better diamond? I think that girls who wear it all over their face deserve bigger diamonds. Of course, she could take peenie's advice and never even put one in her mouf. That seems very effective.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted September 5, 2012 OK so here's the deal.... Just bear with me. I asked him to start this thread because I was looking up rings and I was kinda shocked that the rings I liked were $13K+ so I wanted to know if that was a normal amount of money to spend on an engagement ring. I was looking at Tiffany rings though so there is probably about a 30% mark up just for having the name on it. None of my close friends have any money so it's not about showing off. I just want something I like which is a platinum band and I only want a one karat diamond. And yes this is obviously an investment that we need to take into account for the future and not empty the bank accounts to buy a ring. The other thing to consider here is it's not outside the realm of possibility that I somehow manage to lose the damn thing within a week of me having it. So I've already discussed getting a replica ring that I actually wear around to make sure I don't lose the real one. But then maybe I should just get a replica of the one I want and forego getting the real one all together? That is probably the wisest move but I really want a nice ring even if I don't wear it except on special occasions. The replica idea is absurd. Like people who are scared to dent their new car (do you drive a fake car?). Sh!t happens; this is why people have insurance. If you are too cheap to insure and/or too scared to lose it, get a cubic zirconia.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted September 5, 2012 I got married 17+ years ago. The future Mrs. had been hinting that she expected a big rock. She wanted 2+ carats, perfect clarity. So, rather than buying something and disappointing her, I said that, since this is going to be "our" money moving forward, that she and I should pick out the ring together. We went to a high-end jeweler that sold a lot of diamonds, so their prices were good (not at the mall). Picked out a nice setting and stones. The middle diamond was only 1.5 carats with good clarity (VVS1?), but she was happy. I think that we ended up ponying up like $8k at the time, which was probably at the high-end of what we wanted to pay, but she has worn it every day and still is happy with it. The best piece of advice that I can give you is to understand what her expectations are. If she has friends with huge rocks and you give her a small one, then you are in for some problems. If she is expecting something reasonably priced and you empty the bank, then she will hold that over your head as well. This will be your first large purchase together (maybe?), so discuss it. It is not the most romantic thing to discuss in advance, but over the long-haul, it is better to start off your partnership with a common understanding. Or you can figure it out on your own - see what her friends have, pay attention to her style/sensibility, listen to the hints she'll invariably drop.

penultimatestraw 473 Posted September 5, 2012 The only people who can figure out wimmens like that are wimmens. Do you really want to trust your supposed understanding of her needs and wants for something like that? I don't pretend to understand women, but I think it is lazy and contrived to choose the ring with her. If the chick prefers it that way, fine, but it also destroys the element of surprise/romance in getting engaged. Then again, I've been divorced, so WTF do I know. At least the ex offered to give the ring back - maybe because she didn't like it?

listen2me 23 1,952 Posted September 6, 2012 From experience I can only tell you what I did. I offered my future possible wife that in instead of an engagement ring I would make her an engagement couch. Seriously...I really said that to her. She was an interior designer...I figured she would be thrilled with the idea. In all actuallity, she though that it was kinda cute until I told her that I would really be the one making / handcrafting / welding the 'engagement couch'. So whomever this poor soul is that you are trying to ruin your life with by proposing, I only have this sage advice to offer you: Ask her if she would rather have an engagement couch instead of a ring. Trust me...This will work
