Hardcore troubadour 15,911 Posted July 2, 2019 On 2/6/2014 at 10:17 AM, TD Ryan2 said: if you want to look at music and lyrics as art - as poetry or literature that captures the predicament of man on both an individual level and larger socio-historical level - there is no better song than Springsteen's Youngstown. It's folk-ish, so it's pretty simple musically - but the simplicity of the music coupled with the depth of the lyrics is pretty powerful. Springsteen can take all his over-commercialized crap and junk it - Youngstown, however, is a masterpiece. Ok so, stumbled on this thread while doing some opposition research. This is slightly before my time here. Now I'm going to wager I'm the biggest Bruce fan in these parts. 100 or so concerts in different cities and countries, a fortune in bootlegs before the internet made them obsolete etc etc. But I would like to comment on this song here, Youngstown. First off, on his Live in NYC album he does it with the full band and it has a much louder, bigger feel to it. Add in some painful howling and some emphasis on certain lyrics and it really brings out the plight of what the industrial Midwest once was and what it has become. It tells the story of a large swath of our country that contributed so very much in our countries history, built it from the ground up, lost their children to wars but always had a job to come home to. Then globalism kicked in and much, pretty much all, of that went away, leaving as he says in the song, just scrap and rubble. Come forward a few years and the funny part about this song that describes specific working people and their plight, is that Bruce, lefty that he is, wrote this one about the very people that would years later elect Trump. Having their community destroyed by jobs being sent elsewhere, Trump rollls in and confirms who did it and how they did it (NAFTA) Bruce said the very same things in this song. "Those big boys (banks, corporations) did what Hitler couldn't do" Which was destroy America. Well, their America anyway. It really is amazing to see the same message brought about by opposite ends of the spectrum, and each side thinks it's right when their guy says it, but wrong when the other guy does. Anyhow, not my favorite Bruce song (def top ten) but probabaly his most powerful. Check out the live version.

Voltaire 5,491 Posted July 3, 2019 Bruce speaks the language of Macomb County, Michigan beautifully, I feel his lyrics resonating in my bones. I loved Bruce's music back in the day and all my life, even knowing he was a Democrat as I was a hardcore Republican teen, through independent years when I voted for Dem presidential candidates,, to returning to the GOP with Trump. I suppose Eminem speaks the language of Macomb county well too since we're the same age and both from 8 Mile, but rap music makes my ears bleed so I cannot confirm this. His movie "8 Mile" was pretty great.

Hardcore troubadour 15,911 Posted July 3, 2019 On his album Devils and Dust, released in 2005? He has a song called "Matamoros Banks". It's about a migrant who drowns in the Rio Grande River. Not far from where the man and his daughters remains were found recently. In his song "American Land", (2006) a song about immigrants and how they have been treated historically and now, (it's a rocker) there is a line "they died trying to get here a hundred years ago, they're still dying now" Point? People dying trying to get here pre-dates Donald Trump. But you would never know that if you only watched MSM.

True......I know he's from Jersey, but I still lump him into that category. I actually should have said "Blue Collar". I'd also put, James Taylor, Jackson Brown, Don McClean and a few others in that category which I all like more than Bruce.
