For those who enjoy cutting their own grass, how much pride and pleasure do you take in your lawns appearance?

Not the landscaping so much. The actual cutting and weed eating. Do you cut corners? Skip edging and whatnot?

I get serious pleasure from having my lawn look immaculate. One if my bestest feelings is sitting back with a cold one admiring my work.

From now until October, I will manicure my lawn to perfection no matter what. And I enjoy doing it. You?

I don't cut my own lawn. I have a lawn company come out and cut the grass, edge, and trim the bushes. My wife has flowers that she planted and a garden that she works in. She takes pride in that. When I have kids and they get to an appropriate age I'll make them cut the grass. Don't believe my kids should have everything handed to them cause I never did

I like mowing the grass and it's nice when the lawn looks good. But I don't really do edging and all that. And while I do try to fertilize and treat with a weed killer, I still end up getting some not so great looking spots and a bit of crabgrass.

Wish I was better at it but truth is I don't fully know what I'm doing and I haven't got the time to obsess over it.

I cut my own grass because lawn people are too expensive. It would cost me around 1000-1500 dollars a year since St Augustine grass needs cut once a week from May until October. It also provides the additional benefit of good exercise and getting me outside instead of sitting on the couch in the evening.

But honestly I could care less what my yard looks like, just as long as it average. I will never have yard of the month, but I will also never have a yard that the neighbors talk about.

I'm having a riding mower delivered from Sears tomorrow. Finally gave in. Not that it looks like it's going to mean much this year where I live. Brutal winter and now no rain going on a month doesn't have things looking good, tomorrow is going to be my first cut of the year, had snow on the lawn until early April. I also had some stumps ground down, put in the topsoil, grass seed hay but not much so far. I water it, but it's not working, too much sun. Like they said during the dust bowl, you can't grow any grain without any rain. Lots of dandelions though. Those things will survive the nuclear holocaust.

Beer helps. And listening to sports radio. Great time passer. Get away from the family and enjoy that time between you and your lawn. Have to have an end result that's satisfying.

I pity the guy who comes home and sees beauty. He will say "Fawk that! I can hire "blank" as I have money and my time is worth more!"

Coming home to a lawn you made pretty, has it's positives.

I cut my own with a push mower but my yard is fairly small. I don't get the obsession with having a nice yard. It does nothing good for the environment and is a huge waste of time and money. Even if I had a bigger yard, I would likely tear it up and plant a huge garden.

I used to do it. Now I have a 14 year old son who likes to ride the tractor and mow the lawn. He does a couple of the neighbor's lawns as well. He will trim and use a leaf blower on the clippings that end up on the driveway or walkway.

Grass:

Southern Fescue

Treatments:

Winter Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Spring Fertilizer

Fall aerate and overseed

I mow, trim and blow. It's only a 1/3 of an acre so not all that much, but its nice. Mulch around the bushes and flower beds. Behind my fence in the back yard is Azaleas and pine straw. I try to get that shiit to look like Agusta in April. It's the one thing I enjoy doing besides "sports". I work all damn day in an office so anything to get outside.

I do agree a bit here. I see people who either do it themselves or hire others and they treat the lawns with fertilizer, spray them with weed killer every other month or once a quarter. Then they use Round-Up in the mulch and flowerbeds for weeds just as much. That is alot of chemicals.

I do one application of pre-emergent in the winter and one application of fertilizer in the spring. That's it and that's all that is really needed to keep in in line. Much cheaper and better for the environment (the environment being where my family lives). And I stopped using Round-Up too. I put on a pair of gloves and pick the damn weeks by hand.

I like doing it because I can throw on a set of headphones and music and the rest of the world can STFU for a little while. I have maybe an acre of grass in total, so it takes a while and I love it, outside.....music.....and then it looks nice when I am done.

It's weird, one of the things I miss most about my married days is taking care of my lawn. I was one of those anal guys when it came to fertilizing and lawn care. In spring, my neighbors' lawns would be full of dandelions. I would go out every morning and pull any that would pop up. And again at night. I also had the weighted flap behind my mower that push down the grass so I could make distinct rows of dark green/light green. Similar to what you see at the ballparks.

So this year I have some dead spots on my front lawn. Got out there early in April and tilled the areas and put down some new seed. So far not much has happened.

Got any ideas? I thought it might be from the wifey letting the dog (a b1tch) pee in the yard on occasion but I put the kibosh on that months ago and still no improvement

It's usually caused by excess nitrogen. Which dog urine has a ton of. It's also one of the ingredients in lawn fertilizer, which is why you should load your spreader on pavement or stones, not on the lawn. Any high concentration of fertilizer will cause lawn burn, just like dog urine.

If you put some new topsoil and mix it with grass seed, you should be ok. Sometimes the nitrogen can remain in the soil even after you've made sure the dog doesn't pee there any more.

See, now I'm going to have to stop by Lowes on the way home and get one of those. You can't give me ideas like that.

Take a great deal of pride in both my yard and landscaping. One of the best things I've ever done was get a rechargeable weed eater - those things are the focking bomb.

Female dogs have higher concentration of nitrogen in their pee as well. I would never believe my wife if my dog were pissing in my front yard and she said that she was not letting that happen.

We have neighbors whose dogs piss on my front lawn and make burn spots.

1/3 of an acre treat, push mow, edge, and blow. I would never let my kid (12) touch it. Love doing it myself and love to sit on my a$$ and drink a beer while admiring my work. I will mow it myself as long as I am physically able, until the bitter end.

My yard is foking immaculate and it is a full on competition in my neighborhood, all the men who are real men know it, nothing ever needs to be said. We just give each other the nod of approvement or disapprovement.

We bought our house in December, so we are starting from scratch this spring. The previous owner didn't do much maintenance at all. The back yard is lumpy and it is driving me nuts. I need to rent an aerator an hope this helps to level. <_<

Bought our current/first house this past June. Divorced mom with high-school age daughters were the previous owners. About 2/3 of an acre of lawn which was not taken care of. Plus before we bought it septic work was done so that area was actual dug up and not-well re-planted.

I want the lush green grass that some of the neighbors have. It will take a few years probably. I am doing the fertilizer (and used lime too) myself. Have a service doing the mowing/edging and did a spring clean-up. Going to get a quote too from them to replace a section of "lawn" that is just really, really bad.

mow my own. i like the guys who pay for a gym but cant mow their lawn. can't wait for my son to be old enough to do it though.

ain't got time for crazy obsessed nice lawn though. i throw some fertlizer down in spring and fall.aerate every other year. it's presentable but to really have a nice one here you need a sprinkler system which i do not.

That's pretty cool. I never thought of that.

In the fifteen years I've lived in my house, only once has someone other than me worked on my lawn. I came home form work one Friday before Easter all ready to get started and there's this crack head with a crack head looking lawn mower mowing my front lawn. Me: Hey man. What are you doing? Crack Head: God bless you sir. I needs to buy my daughter an Easter basket. Just trying to make a little monies to do so. Anything you want to give would be much appreciated. Me: Who said you could do this? Only I cut my grass. Your lawn mower is putting ruts in my yard. Please stop. Crack head: I'm sorry sir. Can I have ten dollars for my daughters Easter basket? Me: (You motherfawker. Probably knows I have a daughter) Come back tomorrow.

So crack head leaves down the street with his crack head looking lawn mower. He comes back the next day and is knocking on my door. I gave him ten bucks and the fawker has the nerve to tell me he needs twenty for the nice one at Walgreen's. Me: Get off my lawn!!!

If I wasn't so lazy, I would have a putting green in my back yard. I don't care much about my lawn, but I could get into really taking care of a small portion of it for that. I picture keeping it perfect. I don't even play golf, but it would be cool to be able to go out there and chip and putt.

Would have been pissed if he asked for more. I hate people like that.

Just had my toro push mower get a new spark plug and new blade... So nice compared to my fathers heavy hulking POS push mower that sucked... I had to cut 2 acres as a kid every saturday morning first thing, always had to be when the grass had dew and made everything so much more difficult.

My house is a nice little 1/4 acre lot, so its about 1 hr to do the back side and front yards and usually do a bit of pruning and cleanup each week... Always looks so nice when finished, definitely take satifaciton doing it... Just bought the house last summer so still figuring out how i want to replace the old landscaping/bushes/flowers and whatnot...

i shoveled out a little path away from the house and a round little bathroom area for the dog over the winter, my grass is devastated in that area... I always find it strange that the dog pee burns are bare in the middle, but around the edge of the circle the grass actually grows faster and taller than the other grass... I need to train my dog to walk while he pees

Yup, that's because the nitrogen seeps into the ground and spreads out. Getting weaker as it spreads outward. At a certain level, nitrogen is awesome for the grass. That's why it's in grass fertilizer. The dark grass that grows higher than the rest is getting perfect amounts of nitrogen. As it's more concentrated towards the middle of the circle, it kills the grass.

My father in law has Parkinson's and about 2 years ago he had to stop working in the yard (he can't walk). I think it about broke his heart. He was a serious yard guy. Retired Army, mowed and bagged twice a week, everything just so. Beautiful zoysia lawn, nice landscaping. I mow for him now, but it's not a part of me like it was for him, like what my yard is to me. That's what I don't get about non-yard guys. It becomes who you are.
