Peyton Manning's arm strength 'significantly' worse

Recommended Posts

An AFC pro director told NFL Network's Albert Breer Peyton Manning's arm strength looks "significantly diminished."

An NFC executive said Manning looked "immobile" in the pocket during the preseason and "flinches under pocket pressure." Manning struggled this preseason, fluttering passes across the middle of the field and underthrowing receivers down the sidelines. Manning has the football intelligence to overcome physical limitations, but his collapse down the stretch last year mixed with his underwhelming preseason raise legitimate concerns about his ability to hang with the other elite fantasy quarterbacks.
Wow That sucks

Everybody has been easy on the guy out of pure respect. Giving him the benefit of the doubt that he will just keep on going, but the body is only capable of so much. I agree that because of his absurd ability to throw open a receiver and supreme intelligence that this isn't a standard "he doesn't have the arm anymore". He will be able to compensate to a degree but if teams force him to throw outside the numbers and push the ball down field he may disappoint a lot of fantasy owners.

This past summer a lot of people where posting that is over rated , and what we saw towards the end of last season shown us that his body just can't take it anymore . If you drafted Manning I hope you drafted a good back up , let's say like his Brother Eli .

His arm strength was never what he counted on. Didn't he have a leg injury at the end of last season that he played thru?

I drafted him when he slipped too far, don't have unrealistic hopes but he should be a top 5 QB. Good running game, good defense, good field position. He still has his football smarts.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this true???????

I have not cut Eli yet, but I was thinking hard about it......but now I better watch Peyton carefully the first few weeks to see if maybe he is the one I should cut and go with little bro, Eli instead.

Top 5 seems unrealistic to me

So long as he an get it to Demaryius I'm happy.

I agree. I also have Thomas. I am curious to see how teams defend against him now,

Agree on all but the top five part. Top ten, yeah. I'm not invested in him, but I wouldn't worry too much if I was.

OK, who are top 5?

Rodgers

Luck

Brady

there are no locks for the next 2 spots as far as I can see

Ben, Brees, Manning, Wilson (I think thats a stretch)...

This is old news. Most folks on this board saw this towards the end of last season. I probably wouldn't have drafted him, but I did trade for Demaryius in the off season. It's a crap shoot surely, but I'll still take Peyton throwing to my guy over most of the stiffs at QB in the league.

You've got to ride a guy like that till the wheels come off. But I wouldn't fault anyone from selling high either.

He has been my fantasy field general for years, and has led me to many Championships. He is one of the all-time greats and a class act, as well.

However, for the first time in over a decade, this year I don't own him on any of my teams. I saw those horrid ducks he was tossing up in the last few weeks last year, and could no longer run from the truth. Like a beloved dog that you have owned for years, that you see struggling to walk or get up and down......although it breaks your heart, you have to put him down.

That said, he is Peyton Manning. He possesses superior football intelligence and has great weapons.....and could certainly patch together another good ff season (or two), but it is just a chance that I am no longer willing to take.

I wouldn't say lock. But I think Wilson, Ben, Brees, and Bradford will outscore Peyton. Maybe...just maybe...Tannehill?

This and not the quality of the Bronco Offensive lind should have been the story this season.

I am having to really call into the question the Broncos fans in my league is this turns true. (making mental note).

lets see... Brady looked like poo in preseason as well and then came out swinging. While Payton wont throw any 40yd bombs i am not sure Denver would keep him if his arm was that weak. I believe he will still be top 10 this year

A significant loss would mean he can't throw it 10 yards.

Pretty sure he'd be out of a job no matter what his jersey says if he can't throw a football.

Peyton probably has the worst arm and can't throw a spiral. But his football IQ is what makes him one of the best. During Peyton's historic year, you could tell he had lost it. Or look at the Super Bowl and all the ducks he threw. The reason why Peyton won't be a top 5 QB is because he only has 2 reliable WRS, compared to all the weapons he had in the years past.

But in early August Elway and D. Thomas said his passes has "more zip" on it.

You can't trust the opinions of an ultra experienced former rocket arm QB and the guy who's catching Manning's passes. Sheesh.

This blurb was on my mind this morning as I first read this thread, but it's balanced by a blurb from 8/29 about a preseason game in which Thomas had 3 rec for 30 yds but that Peyton had also underthrown DT on two sidleine routes near the end zone.

Remember his first preseason with the Broncos after his neck injury? I recall thinking…."oh fock! he's done." He then goes out and throw for 4700 yards and 37 TDs. He follows that up with 5,500 yards and 55 TDs.

In his first 10 games last season, he was averaging 330 passing yards and 3 TD per game. His passing attempt then fell off a cliff from week 11 to 14. Quad injury?

The great ones, like Brady in wk 4 of last year when everyone said he was losing it and then he came on strong, have that burning urge to flash an FU to the doubters and I have no doubt this burns within Peyton as well. I'm rooting for him and would like to see him finish on his terms rather than to Father Time's.

At the same time, as an Owen Daniels' owner, I have to manage my own affairs with a "trust but verify" approach. Currently, a little scrutiny is called for.

His play in the preseason concerns me. Drafted him in a 2 QB auction league with Kaepernick (puke) as my QB2. If he has a down year, I'm going to be hurting!

I think as an Owen Daniels owner in PPR this is what I was sort of banking on. I think he catches a lot of balls within 6-7 yds from the line.

Good point.

I can't get his last 5 games out of my mind, but some of you are saying he had a leg injury that may have hindered him. Nevertheless, it doesn't help to know he couldn't reach Thomas on two long passes by throwing under. I'm now kicking myself for drafting him over Taneyhill or Ryan.

I wanted Ben, but he was taken right before me in the 5th round.

He was not healthy end of 2014

Healthy is a very relative term here. Will he ever really be "healthy" if he cant feel his finger tips? Why is no one asking if he has feeling in his other tip?

Peyton has never relied on arm strength. It's not his style. Like someone above me said, "significantly worse" would be not being able to throw over 10 yards. If he couldn't do that then even if he is Peyton Manning he wouldn't be playing cause the coach would take him out. He might not throw 50+ TDs again but he's a safe bet for at least 35 TDs and 4,000 yards.

You think its possible Peytons just not taking the juice anymore and its effecting his throwing?

they said this about mannings arm the year he came back from surgery. apparently he looked terrible in preseason that year too.

they didnt say it the year after he threw for 5000+ yards.

then last year his numbers dipped a little and now they say it agian.

I think its natural that his arm may not be what it was when he was young, but I also think experience makes up for a lot.

I dont think hes washed up, but I also think his 5000 + yard seasons are over.

I thought his arm strength looked poor the year he threw for 5000 yards. He had a ton of weapons and his crazy football IQ to get around it. Heres the thing, at 55 years old are we going to say "well Peytons arm strength was never what he relied on. He still has his brains and thats all he needs". He has to decline at some point.

True enough. Psychologically, I'd rather go one year over than one year under with a guy in this position. I'd be kicking myself for downgrading him a year early, more than for grabbing him one year and that being the beginning of the end. It was the same with Tomlinson not too long ago. I stopped targeting him the year he went to the Jets, when his stats showed I could have stopped a year earlier. But I'd rather go long. Ymmv.

No, because he was never on the Patriots and only the Patriots break the rules
