Sometimes you might nominate an ideologue first so your second guy seems not so bad in comparison. Kinda like when George W nominated the lady from down the hall as his first choice so Alito seemed like a good option since he was at least competent and qualified.

 

But I don't think that's the situation here. Obama will go straight to a should-be consensus choice and then demand the republicans quit obstructing. Republicans will try to come up with some reason this person supposedly isn't fit but it will ring hollow.

The fact is the process of naming a SC Justice takes time. I think they should all (media and politicians) at least give the man 24-48 hrs of respect. There is plenty of time for all this other stuff. Seems weird.

The Republican Party I grew up with was fiscally responsible (mostly, that Laffer dillweed's theories were gathering strength). The Dems have always consistently sucked.

 

I use to care about this stuff deeply too. We've had fifteen straight years of presidents who don't care about balancing the budget with another five years on tap. I thought fiscal irresponsibility would collapse the government like a house of cards, instead it seems to slowly deflate like a balloon I blow up for my daughter three days later that still has air in it but isn't worth playing with.

 

The US has hidden strength that can overcome a lot and is more resilient than I gave it credit for. The Wile E. Coyote looking down moment hasn't occurred yet. At least Gary still has a party invested in his world view. John Kasich is all that's left of politicians that share mine. In Michigan, we're fortunate to have Snyder but he's being hammered on this Flint water fiasco.

 

I just sit here overseas being all gloomy and stuff but still fascinated by it all.

I do not really think I have a party. I HATE the GOP more than the Democrats at this point. Sure, there are a few GOPers I am okay with, but I am not nearly as excited about Cruz as I was when this whole thing started.

Now that you mention it, you're right. Whether or not you agree with him, the guy was a Supreme Court justice, it's pretty impressive. I would be interested in more about his life than his politics. I'm sure his family would like that too.

I think it's in very poor taste the people that are trashing him. He wasn't my favorite but he was definitely a distinguished and influential jurist. Let's focus on that for a few days before dancing on his grave or preemptive it declaring that the president somehow can't exercise the power granted to him under the Constitution.

I think its amusing that the republicans want Obama to leave the decision to the next president. Why in the fock would he do that? No one would really expect a republican pres to do the same in the same situation.

It's so funny how constitutionalists hate the constitution when it isn't convenient for them. It's pretty focking clear what the document says. the president "shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Judges of the Supreme Court". Not he "can" appoint, but he "shall" appoint. It is his and only his responsibility to do so, before he leaves office. Anything else would be unconstitutional.

It's complete BS that Obama would try and nominate a judge when he only has a year left. Lame duck, and all. In fact, he shouldn't really be allowed to do anything at all this year. It's not fair to the next president. And in truth, last year he was on the precipice of only having a year left, so he shouldn't have worked then either. 2014 is borderline, as he was obviously on his way out, as the Presidency isn't permanent. And so many of the things he did even back then will have ramifications beyond his term.

I'd be curious how this assertion really shakes out. I could see that with Sotomayor, and probably Kagan to a large degree, but otherwise, it just sounds like an arbitrary criticism (because they're there to discern and honor precedent and decipher established intent, not rule...this is bascally saying the chicks don't actually do the job how it's meant to be done).
