Never been to one.  I live in Salem MA, there are a fair amount of rainbow flags, a rainbow striped crosswalk, pride events.  there must be a parade.  there is an all day concert and fair type thing in the common.  its pretty tame, lots of gay tunes and dancing.  haven't seen any twirling shlongs yet.

Usually segments of society that are non-majority and are percieved to have been persecuted or overcome great odds, are usually entitled to "pride". Its a celebration of all they have overcome. Gay pride, black pride, etc.
