Roughly 2.8 million people died in the US last year.

61,000 or 150,000 would not significantly move the death rate needle in the US.  If 1% of the population die from COVID 19 that would be 3,282,000 just to put it in perspective.

So, if 1% of our population died, that would be okay?  Just trying to figure out what the measurement is.  I agree that we took some steps to not overwhelm our healthcare systems/people and it was needed.  

I think that we need to start opening up and we need to do it methodically so that we don't have a 2nd wave that would then do the things that we wanted to avoid in the first place.  I do think that the opening up will not just automatically get people back to work since many people will be scared to initially return to 100% normal. I also worry that we have such a safety net in place with unemployment benefits that it pays more to be unemployed than it does to work, but the reality is that we still don't know enough to do simple things like safely going to the dentist.

Well, in all fairness, we are talking about 61,000 people in less than 2 months.  I don't think that we want to have that pace be kept up, even if it is less than 1% of the population.

Even if we opened things up....100% of everything without restrictions circa 2019....people are not going to behave the same way.  People are not going to pack restaurants and stores and go to concerts.  They're not doing that until they feel safe.  It will take time for that to happen....and in the meantime, businesses will continue to lose money.  Basically, no matter what we do, the economy will suffer and people will die.

Having said that, I think the sooner we open things up, the better.  It will give people the time to mentally adjust to everything they've been through.  I think we're starting to do that and with time we'll be in a better spot.

Depends on how they classify those people.  There are many people that live in assisted living that are not sitting in bed or chair just shitting themselves all day.  Some lead productive lives still and get to see their families grow.

I certainly don't want to live anywhere (even at home) where I am just drooling and soiling myself all the time. I have told me kids to put a bullet in me before that time comes.  Of course, they had a gleam in their eye when I said that.

I've lost track of what side I'm supposed to be on let alone what the hell we are arguing at this point  , so I'll just say that I think we should keep retirement homes on lockdown, certainly in larger metro areas, and phase them in at the end phases, since as has been pointed out they are the most likely by far to die from this, and the home can't let it spread through the facility.

Is this supposed to be related to opening up the rest of the economy?
