Yeah, apparently there is a "multiplier" you can buy for an extra buck.  So you got 7 tix @ $3 and we got 10 tix @ $2.  You might win a little more but we got like .0000000000000000001% better odds than you.

Hey @JustinCharge, in case anyone just sees the header and buys tickets, can you fix it to say Mega Millions?  :)

Stupid person tax

For anyone with an extensive math background, the default is buying a ticket is the exact same thing as not buying a ticket. Once you encapsulate it like that, it's easier to help people to understand.

And, yes, it's rigged.

Everyone and their dog is buying up Mega tix.............all of the sudden $1.5B and the lottery isn't a tax on the poor. 🤣

I've looked at the math. I don't buy powerball, megamillions, or scratch offs for that matter.

Even when the numbers get so high that some people think it's worth it, it's not by statistics because most often at that point the pot is split with multiple winners.

I was a stoopid player for 30 years. Yeah I won my 2 grand here and there or $540 but I quit it years ago. I played my numbers tonight for 2 bucks. Why not. It’s 2 bucks.

9 of the 10 largest lottery jackpots {to date} were won by a single ticket.

Yea, I get it, I think it's worth it for the fun just buying one $2 ticket when it reaches this high.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I know the last big Powerball was one person in the Los Angeles area. My cousin and her husband live there, he didn't win.

Yea it's not as common as most think, def happens though.... Of the top 25 largest jackpots, single tickets claimed 18 of them.

I had one #60

You've won $568,098. You need to put that into a fixed annuity.

I know the winners get a fraction of prize.

But it always cracks me up when I hear someone say its up to X billion.  Better get your ticket! As if winning when it is 600 mill isn't worth the trip.

I don't play lotto though.   I don't believe I have ever bought a ticket.

The payout for 1.5 billion is the annuity value.  The internal rate of return on the annuity is high due to higher interest rates making the total payout value 1.5 Billion.  I don’t believe the cash payout is an all time high tho.

Quote

The winning ticket holder can choose between receiving the $1.58 billion record payout spread over 30 annual installments or a lump sum amount of $783.3 million—often the more popular choice. The lump sum payment will first face a mandatory federal tax withholding of 24%, leaving the winner with $595.3 million.

I'd probably take the lump sum, invest a chunk it in my own company and wind up being Advisor of the Year.

Then the usual stuff of paying off the house and vehicles, renovating the house, traveling and having homes elsewhere.

I'd also build a cat paradise elsewhere on the property to get all but one or two out of the house.

Then just hang on to the rest and ensure that future generations never run out of money.
