IGotWorms 4,057 Posted September 29, 2023 I feel like the boomers didn’t really “do” appetizers. I remember they were considered an extravagance at restaurants. We were solidly middle class so I don’t know if the upper middle class felt the same? But seemed like they weren’t very common in my teenage and young adult years. At home, can’t really recall my parents ever serving appetizers. It was usually vegetable, starch and main entree. A salad if they were feeling fancy. Dessert and coffee if company

Fireballer 2,639 Posted September 29, 2023 Didn’t have appetizers as a kid. Didn’t have money for parties or entertaining. I ate jelly or PB on a Ritz cracker if I wanted a snack.

Appetizers didn’t exist in my house. Sometimes dinner was “bean salad” which consisted of kidney beans, chopped egg, mayo and relish mixed together. Tuna casserole. Hot dogs stewed in sauerkraut. Sometimes Fried potatoes with a side of cottage cheese. Scrambled eggs with nothing was probably my most frequent dinner up to age 10.

My mom would pan fry the potatoes and throw the scrambled eggs and cut cooked bacon in over them. Yum. Never appetizers. Just a basic salad daily.

Eat it for 3 weeks in a row as an 8 year old and you might change your tune. Maybe not, though.

My family was upper middle class and I can't think of a single appetizer either of my parents ever made when I was younger. Feel like that generation was still more about casseroles and shit. Then again, neither of my parents are good cooks. Dinner at home was similar to you, veggie/starch/meat.. maybe fish. Or we would order pizza or go out to eat. I guess appetizers were more of a larger family gathering/holiday thing and even then it was crackers and cheese, cheese and fruit plates, deviled eggs, etc I picked up on deviled eggs and tuna salad from my great aunts. wiffleball 4,788 Posted September 30, 2023 Mom had a rotating full contact bridge game 4-5 tables. Always tried to be fancyish. Think: Scene from Sopranos wives party. My folks also played cards with the other Brothers and Wives once a month. Same thing. Then the occasional holiday, football, etc shebang. We had to be GONE/Invisible. Got very good at filching food. I think basically, as long as we didn't get caught or take too much, and stayed the hell invisible and silent, she didn't care too much. To this day, I can't even buy myself bridge mix without feeling too guilty to do so. I'm pretty sure my mom would have broken a few fingers if she ever caught me digging into those bowls.
