I had one as a kid, but glad I never had to play it again after NES came out.

I am not exaggerating when I say the Christmas when I got my 2600 was one of the best days of my life. You could give me a million dollars right now and I wouldn’t be that excited.

NES was a game changer.  For some reason, circa 1986, I thought I would go against the grain and ask Santa for an Atari 7800 over a NES.  Needless to say I chose wrong.  The 7800 sucked obviously.  I remember going to a kids house and playing SMB and Pro Wrestling.  I was hooked.  My parents made me use paper route money to buy a NES.

Atari never really took at our house, NES was the spark that lit the gaming flame.

I vaguely remember playing Pitfall, so, I'll go with that.

Pittfall and Pittfall 2 for me.

I could literary play pitfall for hours on one single game. Sounds boring now.
I do not remember pitfall 2

Pitfall 2 had this balloon thing. I think I liked it better but it’s been forever.

My favorite 2600 games as a kid - no particular order:

Yars Revenge
Pitfall
Air-Sea Battle (Just cuz it was my first game) I still remember "Game 11" was favorite.  Crazy how that sh!t sticks in ones brain.
Track and Field (who else wore blisters into center of their hand?)
Missile Command
Defender

Reminder and advice:  If you were to play any of your favorite 2600 games now, you'd ruin the memory .  Don't do it.

I probably told this story before but TM mentioned Missile Command which I do not remember as an Atari game (asteroids either) but me and 2 buddies did a charity thing where at our local arcade we played Missile  Command for over 24 straight hours and local businesses donated $$. Do not remember if it was based on hours or score but it was for a local kid with cancer.

River Raid was my favorite.  That and Pitfall are the only ones I remember.

my first real system was a Sega in 1989.

You are a round knob.

I killed it on that game. Caught the pattern and ran away with it.

I disagree with this.  I have a couple of the Arcade 1up machines and enjoy playing the old games.  It's the games that make it fun, not that they have 2023 graphics and sound.

To answer the OP, probably Asteroids cause I was good at it.  Loved Defender too but it frustrated me cause I wasn't good at it lol.

Yeah...but with so many things....we remember them for how they made us feel "then" - but now, when we play them, I dunno....its usually not as good as we remember them.  And Arcade 1up are better than Atari.

Sort of like the movie "The God's Must Be Crazy". When I first watched it, I laughed. It was funny. It was "good".  I bet now I couldn't get through 20 minutes.

Speaking of Defender...part of the fun for me, was going up into the top edge of the screen and disappearing. It seems like it was an "easter egg" before it's time.

All these games can now be played using a PC and launchbox, along with almost any arcade game you can think of.

This is the correct answer and bought a tablet years back just for this game. Oh and I had Intelevision, friends had Atari.

I have a classic Atari collection for my Switch. Asteroids, Centipede, and Millipede are probably the games I play the most.  Missile Command and Defender are next tier.
