My evidence is the last several election cycles. You’re quite right that Democrats are incompetent at messaging but the Republicans have proved even more inept as of late. And the comprehensive immigration reform is essentially just letting in millions and millions of more illegals. It doesn't solve the problem. I'd really love it if our government did their actual focking job and solved the problem. Absent that I won't support any reform bill that is in name only. But let’s be very clear: if Congress passed a bill giving immediate amnesty and full citizenship to every undocumented person living here without any kind of additional border security, it would still have a net very positive economic effect for this country.

Voltaire 5,316 Posted February 4, 2024 Today we should finally learn what the law says and can actually discuss it's merits. Expecting us to just agree to something because Mitch McConnell and Mitt Romney got together with a bunch of Democrats is stupid. But fair enough, that works both ways, rejecting it because President Trump warns us it's bad is also unfair. A reminder of four things adn likely much much more: Remember that Joe Biden has the same laws on the books that Donald Trump had and does absolutely nothing. That Joe Biden blocks Texas from enforcing US immigration policy That just last week, 3/4 of House Democrats came out in support open borders to the extent that even illegal aliens convicted of a DUI must not be deported. That in their 2019 presidential debate, all ten Democrat presidential candidates came out in support of paying for health care to illegal aliens So among all their other dozens of flaws, on immigration, this is exactly who the Democrats are and this is what we are dealing with. 1

In response to your 4 items: 1. I don’t care whether you or Bill Maher or whomever makes this argument it’s not accurate. The only significant difference between Trump and Biden years in terms of enforcement that has had any effect is Remain  in Mexico and it would have been thrown out by the courts by now even if Trump had been re-elected. Trump’s other policies, beyond being inhumane and cruel, were also completely ineffective. If Trump was President right now we would be facing the exact same crisis at the border and he would be asking Congress for the exact same powers that Biden is asking for- except that his proposals would be a lot crueler and a lot less effective. 2. Texas is not enforcing US immigration policy. Barbed wires in rivers plays no part in US policy, never has, and never should. Texas is acting as a rogue agent in many ways and needs to be stopped. 3. I would have voted for that bill and many Democrats did. The majority that did not argued that there should be no new deportation laws on the books without comprehensive immigration reform, a broader argument which I also generally agree with. Your interpretation that they are for open borders is false and extreme. 4. Of course undocumented immigrants need health care. There are around 15 million of these people. Without healthcare they can be a public health risk, particularly when it comes to tuberculosis. Every visit to the ER costs us far more as taxpayers than if we simply gave them access, this is just common sense. We would save tons of money by doing this. 1

It would raise the standard to get asylum, send away those who don't qualify and expedite cases for those who do.

IGotWorms 4,058 Posted February 5, 2024 Sounds like something the MAGA crowd should want   The bill features some of the most significant border security restrictions Congress has contemplated in years. They include making it more difficult to claim asylum, vastly expanding detention capacity and effectively shutting down the border to new entrants if more than an average of 5,000 migrants per day try to cross over unlawfully in the course of a week, or more than 8,500 attempt to cross in any given day.
