Students Target Teachers on Social Media

Curious people's thoughts on this (even though I'm sure I know how it will break)

This is happening in a pretty affluent school district in Pennsylvania in a suburb of Philadelphia. Here is the link to the New York Times story:

For those that don't want to read here is the gist: Students at a middle school in the district have created fake TikTok accounts for teachers in the school that according to the article are: "rife with pedophilia innuendo, racist memes, homophobia and made-up sexual hookups among teachers." in total there have been 22 fake teacher accounts created- about a quarter of the faculty. 

A Spanish teacher in the school had a fake account set up where they took a picture of her from her real social media account (she does not use TikTok) and said she likes to touch kids. Also, "Students took images from the school’s website, copied family photos that teachers had posted in their classrooms and found others online. They made memes by cropping, cutting and pasting photos, then superimposing text.

Some of the jokes were harmless in nature but others- like one where it took the heads of two male teachers and superimposed them onto a couple in bed together- were not. The student council advisor at the school had a picture of his wedding on his social media that students took, cropped the wife out and then implied that he married a student at the school. One teacher had death threats posted against her.

Two students posted an apology video online (13 and 14 years old) and had this to say: "

“We never meant for it to get this far, obviously,” one of the students said in the video. “I never wanted to get suspended.” “Move on. Learn to joke,” the other student said about a teacher. “I am 13 years old,” she added, using an expletive for emphasis, “and you’re like 40 going on 50.”

Teachers have said it has made discipline hard because if a kid gets pissed and is going to try to ruin you online is it worth it to yell at them for not being prepared for class.

Obviously the school has struggled how to deal with this because you can't control what students are doing during off school hours and it gets to be sticky in free speech things as judges and courts have kind of set precedents that schools have no real recourse and can not go after students in these scenarios.

I also think this is what happens when people spend years chipping away at the institution of school. And I blame a lot of people for that- there are people on the right (and left honestly) who have made teachers the enemy and turned the parent/student/teacher triangle into an antagonistic scenario and sewing that distrust so strongly is eventually going to cause ripples. Secondly- the idiotic teachers who decide to go on social media and talk about "how they have to talk about their sexual orientations with kids" make it real easy for people to wiggle into those antagonistic scenarios.

Lastly- I think every person here encountered teachers they liked and disliked in school. Usually the ones we hated stick with us longer- but I can't imagine the amount of disrespect involved in going after a teacher like this. There is a certain line you cross when you are trying to ruin someone's personal life for laughs or because they gave you a detention for cutting class and the like.

I don't mind cameras in the classroom (I've got nothing to hide about what I do) but I think you will run into issues with some teachers not wanting them feeling that they are being watched by Big Brother and some parents not wanting them as they will feel it is violating their child's privacy.

I'm more taken aback by just the blatant lack of respect for the teachers in this instance as it relates to this story

Video could be erased at the end of the day if there are no incidents.  There is video on school buses.

I agree.  This is why social media is a cancer and why we can't have nice things.  And everyone knows that kids are the worst.   This is not cool at all and tells me there is a parenting issue (not all cases, of course).

How are camera's in a classroom any different than police body cams?

1. Law enforcement should work closely to find all facts to see if they combine to make elements of a crime

2.  Social media companies should find out if they violated TOCs and suspend all of their accounts. 
3. Appropriate school discipline for students

4. Teachers unions should financially support legal civil action against the families, if applicable.

It starts out like that but it always expands. It can’t just be that day because what if the issue isn’t reported for a few days, or the guy that’s supposed to pull the video is busy or on vacation, etc.

So it’s gotta be like five days and usually it’s two weeks.

Then something happens, maybe a girl gets sexually assaulted but she’s too afraid or ashamed to report it for weeks. Oh but you erased that video. How could you??

Now it’s months and pretty soon, well let’s just make it basically indefinite.

Not saying it’s a bad idea, but the idea that you can keep it circumscribed is fantasy.

Teachers get victimized outside of the school and the solution is to put the teachers under surveillance.

The OP spoke about discipline and that teachers were reluctant to enforce it due to retaliation. How about reading the whole thing? HTDS strikes again.

Make the suspension come with an in depth explanation that goes on their permanent records which will be transmitted to colleges, UNLESS the treacher victimized moves to have the information removed.  That would give power to the teachers and would encourage the parents to seek that favor by strongly disciplining their kids and making sure the teacher approves of the disciplinary lesson taught.

I'm still not sure when we went over the edge as a society and parents began taking their kids' side over the teachers. When I was a kid, the kids were always assumed to be at fault, and the vast majority of the time they are.

My kids get the same benefit of the doubt that I did. Zero. Default to taking the teacher's side unless irrefutable evidence points elsewhere.

If they focked up and got involved, I’d be pissed, but I’d make them apologize in a big way and use it as a teachable (no pun intended) moment.

If they then publicly stated that the teachers are sad old people that can’t take a joke… that kid wouldn’t see the light of day until he turned 18

Yeah, my kids were raised like I was:  if you get in trouble in school, you get it twice as bad at home.

One of my daughters was suspended for a social media thing.  It was a questionable offense but she had agreed not to post anything about a specific girl (I think she liked something someone else posted).  Also I found out she lied to me about details, as I was talking to the principle about it.  I confirmed that nothing went on her permanent record.  The real punishment was that this suspension prevented her from being in a school theater performance, so she learned a hard lesson and we didn't have to add any punishment.

As mentioned earlier, we do it with Police, why can't the same be applied to teachers/classrooms?  Even more so with the classroom.  Now kids can't just wander into a room unaccompanied and do crap and get away with it.

My wife is a teacher and she's had it pretty good but is ready to retire when she can in a few years.  Our youngest daughter right now claims she wants to be a teacher, I'm going to do my best to discourage that.
