She has health issues and they're concerned about another Ginsburg situation that allows Trump to appoint her replacement.  So, the idea is she retires and before Trump is inaugurated Biden appoints Sontamayor's replacement and gets it confirmed.  The timeline is doable.  Trump did it quicker with Amy Coney Barrett:

No F'ing way.  We already have that one DEI SC justice who doesn't even know what a woman is.  Two GOP justices are likely to retire during Trump's term.  Would be great for him to get to nominate three more justices that are going to be there for most of the rest of my life and ensure a conservative SC.

Just a comment on the specific choice- it’s been nearly 100 years since a NON judge was chosen for the Supreme Court. I don’t think it’s happening again in our lifetimes.
