Where the hell does all that money come from ? I realize it's New York, but isn't baseball in trouble ? If they weren't, why would they be considering resorting to this ?

Pathetic

Cohen said he would go 50 million over the highest bid. He wasn't lying.

Red Sox could have signed Betts and Bogey before they were up and paid less than the Soto contract

Meh...They will get a few good years from him and absolutely regret it later.  These long term contracts are dumb

I’m not a baseball guy.  Does this make them a perennial front runner?  It’s still just one guy.  Is he considered the GOAT or something?  I honestly don’t know.  Still gotta have a team around him, right?

he was on the Padres last year, who have a much better roster than the Mets. The Padres did not win it all.

Bryce Harper’s deal looking like a bargain. :first:

I admit, I thought it couldn't go any higher than what Betts got, or not that much more. Betts was 12 years 365 million.

At this point, we have to assume there will be a 100 million per year contract.

MLB needs a salary cap.

Thank you.  Not just for the teams that don't spend, but for the top spenders too.  If I were a Dodgers fan and we won the Series I would be like "well, yeah." :dunno:

The fans are the ones that get the shaft the most, even in those cities.  Philly, LA, both NY teams, and others, spend out the azz.  Yeah, there's more money coming into the cities via luxury boxes, advertisement, and alike, but ticket prices are still going to go up like crazy.  These teams are going to end up pricing out the average fan from the ballpark.  It's going to make it harder to get younger fans.  This has been happening league-wide, but they seem to try gimmicks to get people interested, instead of fixing the obvious problem.

Yep. Not even close to making them a perennial front runner.

Mets gave him a suite.

That whole thing is insane.   Guy gets a 51 million per year deal and wants free suites too that he could afford with 2 at bats at 88k per

Remember when the Dodgers gave Kevin Brown use of their private jet?  Then the Yankees traded for him just in time for him to help the Red Sox win from down 3 to 0 in the ALCS

great signing.  In the context of baseball (which needs a salary cap so billionaire hedge fund owners can't spend their own money, etc).

So just in terms of baseball, this is huge for the Mets. In the past, big time players like this only went to the Mets at the ends of their careers. Soto is 26 years old and possibly the best positional only player in the game.

It's also big for the Mets because it shows they are finally starting to "get it".  If you're going to spend big, spend big on a positional stud who theoretically will play 150+ games. Don't spend big on a starting pitcher who will at best pitch 35 games and comes with a much higher risk of arm issues these days.

It's funny to see the Yankees not be able to buy Soto and then give a huge contract to Max Fried. It's like the roles have reversed.

I love what the Mets are doing when it comes to the rotation and free agents. 1-2 year deals for talented guys whose luster has worn off. Guys who have the stuff and are then motivated to parlay it into a bigger contract.  Worked with Severino and Manaea last year. Lets see if it works with Frankie Montas this year.

I remember when the Mets and the Yankees were both going after Bonilla. Worked out great for both teams.
