there are certainly times where this applies, the cry racism defense. there doesn't seem to be a blame that the act or accusation is racist, just that the girl has received racist backlash of some kind(like whats presented in the story). do you believe that didn't happen? (I don't know for sure if it did or not, but we have some light racism in this thread). if it did happen, you think she should just shut up about it?

I think she would be foolish to NOT find some racism angle to toss out there.   It a perfect way to diminish any scrutiny or accountability. They were in a tough spot given the context of the situation, but kudos to them for finding a way.
