I'm saying they tried to get him to step aside but initially he refused to do so. So they posted that letter to X without his knowledge or consent. Then they threatened him, presumably with the 25th amendment, but only Pelosi, Obama and Biden know for sure. At that point he reluctantly agreed to step aside. But he didn't really have a choice. And I'm standing up for democracy, not democrats. The Dem party hijacked the process, foisted a new nominee on the country and didn't give the voters a say. Nobody voted Harris for potus. Had there been a primary she would not be the nominee.

Maureen Dowd uses the word “coup” rather liberally. In Latin America, a coup is when a leader is forced out by gunpoint, on pain of death, etc. In this case strong pressure was put on Biden to withdraw from the race, but in the end it was his decision. He wasn’t blackmailed, wasn’t threatened with anything other than embarrassment and potentially a spoiled legacy. Nothing illegal occurred. So the answer to the question of the title of this thread is still no, whatever Maureen Dowd thinks. There was no coup.

The letter on X was not on Presidential letterhead, was not written by him and was not signed by him. Don't you think that when a Presidential nominee decides to step down that mebbe a press conference is called for, rather than a social media post? Everybody knew he wasn't up to the job. The fact that he couldn't keep it together until after the election is not a shock to anyone who had been paying attention. I said from day one that he wouldn't make it through a full term. Turns out I was right. That doesn't excuse the Dem attempt at gaslighting half the country into believing he was of sound mind and capable of serving another 4 years. They should have admitted the obvious, held a primary, and allowed the electorate to have a voice. You know, democracy.
