IRS "loses" 2 years of Lois Lerner emails. How convenient.

Recommended Posts

LMAO at e-mails being stored on individual computers and not a server. Who's running that IT dept? A monkey?

I have them not only on the incoming mail server but also the incoming mail archive server.

Volt, not convincing, how? The only way that the HD story didn't happen, is if they have completely fabricated emails, work documents/work orders and have convinced IT guys and computer repair facilities to be a part of the scheme. I'm not talking about the targeting/whether or not it happened, this thread is about the lost emails and I don't see how the "conspiracy" story is any more plausible or convincing than a hard drive failed.

I could be all these computers with all the relevant data on it really did crash and the process they use to back up the data on those computers was poorly thought out, inadequately designed, and riddled with holes. So stuff gets lost. It could be the person responsible for designing the system and saving all this high level IRS data is even more tech inept than I am. That seems really unlikely though.

Or it could also be that Lois Lerner's refusal to testify was then backed up with the deliberate loss of the the exact emails that were of most relevance to the questions she would have been asked in the investigation.

Occam's razor.

When an administration is caught abusing it's executive power to target political opponents with retribution it's really bad news. Ask Chris Christie. It looks to a lot of folks like these tea party groups were targeted for special attention. Was it due to the IRS being flooded with applications from tea party groups? or Was it political retribution? We don't know. Lois Lerner refuses to testify, which would indicate that she's covering something up. Then her emails disappear.

The excuse we're given is that the system was poorly designed to save them. As we all know, before 2011, nobody ever heard of computers crashing. Also, nobody reasoned that there may ever be a need to back up top level government documents any longer than six months. It's perfectly reasonable, normal, and OK to simply get rid of important government documents from high level officials twice a year.

Personally, I think the tech support being incompetent argument is bullsh*t. When I look at this, I see Lois Lerner jumping on a grenade.

That was really impressive, insults, accusations and not a shred of evidence, I can see why you're so excited, it was like a less retarded version of you. Can we expect more "nothing" tomorrow?

What's funny, is you keep running around accusing people of believing stuff, yet you're the one who believes in a conspiracy that doesn't have a shred of evidence. It would be laughable, if it weren't so sad.

Not just Lerner but 6 other key people had their disks crash? Cmon man.

The House Ways and Means Committee says that this past Monday, the IRS told them that the agency also lost emails belonging to six other IRS employees whose hard drives had also crashed.

One of those six employees was particularly important: Nikole Flax, who had worked as chief of staff to the former head of the IRS. Flax was known to be involved in discussions about the tea party targeting.

The agency told CNN: "the IRS in recent days identified other instances where individuals had hard-drive issues. We are still assessing whether any of this data is permanently irretrievable, so it is premature to say that a significant amount of this data was lost as a result of these issues."

CNN

Not sure where people are getting that it's "key" people who had hard drive failures. From Koskinen at 1:32, he says during the review of the other 82 employees(same office---I guess, not sure of the time period, sounds like last 3 years), that 6 other drives crashed. From my understanding, considering the level of technology the IRS is using(Windows XP), I don't find it shocking that of 82 people, 6 drives could fail. I've had 3 HD failures at my office(only 12 employees) in the last year---it happens.

One of the employees(Flax) was considered important and a person of interest, but my understanding is they are still in the process of recovery. So we shall see what happens. Before saying it's a conspiracy or chance though, definitely need more information on who/what was lost.

However, Koskinen rejected statements made by Camp earlier his week that the crashes had destroyed records kept by Flax. Koskinen said Flax's emails were retrieved from a second computer. He said it is still not known whether emails have been lost because of the other crashes.

Koskinen suggested that he would no longer provide incremental reports on the crashed hard drives to Camp, for fear it would be distorted in the media.

"So those press releases with regard to Nikole Flax were inaccurate and misleading, and it demonstrates why we will provide this committee a full report about the (hard drives) when it is completed," Koskinen said. "We're not going to dribble out the information and have it played out in the press."

IRS CANCELLED Contract with Email-Storage Firm Weeks After Lerner’s Computer Crash

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cancelled its longtime relationship with an email-storage contractor just weeks after ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s computer crashed and shortly before other IRS officials’ computers allegedly crashed.

The IRS signed a contract with Sonasoft, an email-archiving company based in San Jose, California, each year from 2005 to 2010. The company, which partners with Microsoft and counts The New York Times among its clients, claims in its company slogans that it provides “Email Archiving Done Right” and “Point-Click Recovery.” Sonasoft in 2009 tweeted, “If the IRS uses Sonasoft products to backup their servers why wouldn’t you choose them to protect your servers?”

Sonasoft was providing “automatic data processing” services for the IRS throughout the January 2009 to April 2011 period in which Lerner sent her missing emails.

But Sonasoft’s six-year business relationship with the IRS came to an abrupt end at the close of fiscal year 2011, as congressional investigators began looking into the IRS conservative targeting scandal and IRS employees’ computers started crashing left and right.

Sonasoft’s fiscal year 2011 contract with the IRS ended on August 31, 2011. Eight days later, the IRS officially closed out its relationship with Sonasoft in accordance with the federal government’s contract close-out guidelines, which require agencies to fully audit their contracts and to get back any money that wasn’t used by the contractor. Curiously, the IRS de-allocated 36 cents when it closed out its contract with Sonasoft on September 8, 2011.

Lois Lerner’s computer allegedly crashed in June 2011, just ten days after House Ways and Means Committee chairman Rep. Dave Camp first wrote a letter asking if the IRS was engaging in targeting of nonprofit groups. Two months later, Sonasoft’s contract ended and the IRS gave its email-archiving contractor the boot.

IRS official and frequent White House visitor Nikole Flax allegedly suffered her own computer crash in December 2011, three months after the IRS ended its relationship with Sonasoft.

Sonasoft's contracts with Treasury were pretty modest: about $5,556 in 2005, $24,706 in 2008, and $13,983 in both 2009 and 2010.

Wanna bet this isn't the smoking gun you think it is...

Why do those amounts make your case? As an individual I pay about $50 to Carbonite to back up everything on my Computer, not just emails. Hard drive space is cheap. You don't think someone can store emails for $14K per year?

Who is all in, Sport. I said it was a coincidence. A happy coincidence the company who has been advertising that they back up IRS servers for years gets their contract stopped 2 weeks after Lerner's emails were requested by Congress.......and just before her computer crashed.

Has to be a coincidence. Move along, nothing to see here.

Banner on their home page: "Email Archiving Done Right"

All reports I see say they backed up emails for the IRS.

What do you have that tells us what they did for the IRS, Mike? :bench:

Sonasoft did provide the automatic data processing services for the IRS, which included backing up documents and emails during the time period of Lerner’s now famous missing emails. This means the emails were backed up and since the IRS paid for those years between 2005 and 2011 for document backup, you would think they should be able to access them.

The timing of this severed relationship is of vital importance, as it not only occurred right after Lerner’s computer crashed, but also shortly after the IRS received a letter from Rep. Dave Camp specifically asking them if they targeted nonprofits for audits.

Sonasoft says they provided products, your article says they backed up documents and emails---two different things, and for 14K a year(MAX), I'm betting it's going to be products. I'm sure, we will see soon enough---and I'm sure you'll man up and admit you're wrong if that proves to be a case of products being purchased..

By the way, tracing your articles back to the source, it seems everything is based off a few snippets from Sonasoft's website(of services they offer) and that tweet, not one person has stated that they were doing any of the actions you say they were doing, no CONTRACT for services, as you stated. All your reports seem to be coming from the right-wing blogosphere with no confirmation at all. Guess that's what you consider hard evidence in your world.
