The Science Behind “Deflate-Gate”

The Pressure In AFC Championship Footballs Could Have Changed By 1.95 PSI From

Weather and Field Conditions

Pittsburgh, PA (January 23, 2015) -- HeadSmart™Labs, a Healy Ventures LLC company, today

announced findings from a study on football inflation levels in different climates. The study indicated

that the pressure in the footballs used in the AFC Championship game could have dropped 1.95 PSI

from weather and field conditions alone.

HeadSmart Labs set out to discover if weather during the AFC Championship Game on Sunday,

January 18 could have affected the inflation levels in the footballs. The Lab designed a study that would

simulate the external elements the game footballs were exposed to. The study encompasses the

timeframe from when referees would have initially tested the footballs prior to the start of the game, to

the time when the footballs were found to have a lower air pressure during halftime. Reports state that

when the game officials tested the New England Patriots’ footballs during halftime, 11 of the 12 were

found to have lost pressure of about 2 PSI.

“We took 12 brand new authentic NFL footballs and exposed them to the different elements they would

have experienced throughout the game.” said Thomas Healy, founder of HeadSmart Labs. “Out of the

twelve footballs we tested, we found that on average, footballs dropped 1.8 PSI when being exposed to

dropping temperatures and wet conditions.”

During testing, twelve brand new footballs were inflated to 12.5 PSI in a 75 degree Fahrenheit room.

This was to imitate the indoor conditions where the referees would have tested the footballs 2 hours

and 15 minutes before kickoff. The footballs were then moved to a 50 degree Fahrenheit environment

to simulate the temperatures that were experienced throughout the game. In addition, the footballs

were dampened to replicate the rainy conditions.

HeadSmart Labs found that on average the footballs dropped 1.1 PSI from the 25 degree temperature

change alone. The Lab also found that when the leather was wet, the ball dropped an additional 0.7

PSI. In combination, it was found that on average the footballs lost 1.8 PSI with a max of 1.95 PSI from

exposure to game day elements.

The must be the same thing that Pro Football Talk was going to report earlier when they said they were waiting on one more phone call. They have video tape of him taking the balls from officials locker room to another area? This whole thing as been filled with reports and false reports who the hell knows.

From Rotoworld:

FOX's Jay Glazer reports the NFL has identified a Patriots locker room attendant as a "strong person of interest" in the ball-deflation scandal.

The league finally has its Ollie North. Per Glazer, the attendant "allegedly took balls from the officials' locker room to another area on way to the field." There is reportedly video of the incident. Glazer says the league is "still gauging if any wrong doing occurred." It's been obvious from Day 1 the Pats were going to set up some sort of underling as the fall guy, the only question is if he'll sing. The entire "scandal" is long past played out. It would be a shame were it to dominate all pre-SB chatter.

So essentially Glazor is reporting there is a Patriots locker room attendant on tape taking balls to another area after inspection and before gametime. So I am sure BilliCheat and Tom will have no idea this guy was deflating them in the other room. Somebody had to take the fall right?

So will Goodell fine Cheatriots and flush tape before anyone else can see it?

Took them over a week to FINALLY track down a tape of the footballs moving from locker rooms to the field? You would think their first line of thought would be "Let's check the tapes from before the game. See what happens after the balls are inspected and where they go from there. Should be able to help us track down what happened from when they were inspected to when they hit the field". Either the nfl is completely retarded in it's investigation process or something stinks. Whether it be nfl trying to find someone to punish in this so they don't look like retards or someone is paying someone off so the patriots don't get in trouble. I'm a pats fan but this whole process has been complete and utter bs.

You mean the one that is tops on every headline? One the nfl has investigation ongoing? One that Brady and Billicheat have held press conferences on? One that people are mocking on SNL and during White House briefings?

Man the power I have for the rest of the US to follow my lead

Lol my judgement is pretty good seeing as they have a guy on Tape disappearing with the balls. Person of interest is never a good thing

Interesting piece on statistical analysis of fumble rates over the last 5 years. Naturally, Pats fans will immediately become statistics experts and find fault with it. http://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/blog/2015/the-new-england-patriots-prevention-of-fumbles-is-nearly-impossible

Now that's interesting. There are several counter arguments, but none IMO that completely counter the statical probability of NE being that much of a fumbling outlier.

I like your relative even-handedness. This tape showing up a week later is suspicious to me. It smacks of NE trying to find a fall person, and contriving one if needed. That makes me think it is more likely than less that key people are truly responsible for illicitly manipulating the equipment.

No I don't doubt the pats. I doubt the nfl it it's issues wth investigations. Why now did they decide to check the one thing that could easily tell them what happened with the footballs. The more this plays out the more the nfl look unreliable. If you stop and think logically for a second why has it taken them this long to produce this video tape? No something smells fishy with the nfl league office and they seem to be trying their best to not look like fools

I'm questioning the higher ups in this. There are only two ways this could go. Nfl is trying to not look like idiots and find someone to blame or someone in the pats organization is trying to find a scape goat. My money though is on the nfl at this moment cause it took them this long to find a tape they should already have looked at

I think if the NFL took this long to see a tape, it's because NE made them take that long. The tape was in NE's facilities, after all.

That is a good point. Forgot it was there. Still with the investigation going on you would think that's the first thing thy would demand to see right away

What is the "statistical probability" of Aaron Rodgers going as long as he has without a home interception?

Also, if it's about the balls, and they are supposed to be so much easier to catch, why aren't the Pats statistical outliers in dropped passes? In fact they're one of the worst teams in the league for dropped passes over the last five years.

You didn't like the article, I take it?

An individual performance regarding accuracy and skill isn't quite applicable to an entire team's proclivities over many years, is it? Particularly since there has been turn over in the RB position, which has the most bearing on the topic?

Consider: we know Belicheck abhors fumbles, and severely punishes players guilty of them. And - of course - NE fans will attempt to use that to defend their team, simply saying that sort of discipline is the very reason why their fumble rate is low.

That is one of the arguments I said would exist. I'm going to turn it around though. I think that knowing that Belicheck HATING fumbles - combined with his apparent shady character - would bolster the suspicion that he would have his fingers in this.

Do I think he's above violating a rule like this to lower the incidence of fumbles, particularly in light of Brady's admission that he prefers a less deflated ball?

No, I don't.

Also, if it's about the balls, and they are supposed to be so much easier to catch, why aren't the Pats statistical outliers in dropped passes?

You're asking me to defend an argument I never made. I said easier to throw, and easier to carry. If I had to comment, however, I would say that I don't know the stats on that, so you'd have to enlighten me - then I'd comment.

In fact they're one of the worst teams in the league for dropped passes over the last five years.

I'd like to see the stats, and see if they are outliers, or if they are simply on the bottom half, which would be understandable considering their historic relative lack of great receivers.

You all seem to be assuming the NFL has only now seen the tape because it is being reported today. Could be that they've had it from nearly the get-go. NE immediately pledged full cooperation and probably turned over that tape (or provided access to it) as soon as it could be gathered. Believe me, if they withheld the tape that would be a much bigger story in and of itself.

My guess is the NFL has had it all along and are now scrambling to find justification for the accusations.

What is the variance on the fumble stat? Are the other 31 teams clustered tightly around the average, or are they all over the place?

Trying to rule out lying with statistics.

Kraft with some strong words for the NFL in that he defends his team, wants an apology when they are exonerated and chastised the media.

Belichick and Brady are in to Seattle.

Even the NFL said not believe the reports and wait until they have finished their investigation. The one that does get me fired up is when people say well 11 of 12 of the Patriots balls were measured under and why did none of the Colts balls fall under. Well no one knows what the Patriots or Colts balls measured before or after.

You asked what would think if they are found to have been tampered with? I'll say they flocked up and are damn fools cause they took what would normally be a very minor infraction and turned it into circus. I'll say for the 100th time everything up to this point points to them not doing It. I'll ask again to find me one instance that Belichick or Brady have gotten in front of press and lied?

I'm sure the NFL didn't like that. Kraft is just little pissed and especially about someone in NFL supposedly leaking stories that aren't true. Someone told ESPN's Sal Pal that Kraft was just reminding Goddell who he works for. Now all the Patriot haters gonna say Goddell covering for his buddy.

It's kinda fun being on the hated side and now know how Yankees fans used to feel back in day. Cause I hated them and still do.

From that earlier video, "YA HATE US, CUS YA AINT US!!" hahaha

You're wondering if the NFL is 'scrambling to find justification for the accusations' while simultaneously asserting the had a video of a NE employee diverting the balls to another place right before they were placed in the game?

What scrambling would have to be done? There's a guy with the balls doing exactly what one would have to do to alter them!

It would be helpful to know the PSI of every Patriot football before the game that passed inspection and for every football at halftime. Same goes for the COLTS footballs. Ridiculous all of this trying to interpret short sentences from the media. Until I get some solid numbers, I can't reach any kind of conclusion, and want to ignore this as it's really annoying. Would be really great if anyone, anywhere, could talk about matchups, keys to the game, etc. about the game of football, you know the reason anyone should care really. Same with the overanalyzation of officiating that goes on every focking week. I miss enjoying the game. It's like a focking soap opera where all fans seem to care about is mocking other fans, whining about the refs, or going completely off the deep end about this. Who focking cares what the ball is inflated to or deflated to. It passed inspection. And why is there even a rule about the psi? So stupid. Who cares if a team prefers a ball with much less air or much greater air. :wall:

Im guessing it's because Aaron Rodgers would be throwing basketballs and Brady frisbees and so it wont look like football any more.
