++ UPDATE: 4-Game Suspension Upheld - 11 of 12 footballs NE used were deflated 2psi!

Recommended Posts

FOX's Jay Glazer reports the NFL has identified a Patriots locker room attendant as a "strong person of interest" in the ball-deflation scandal.

The league finally has its Ollie North. Per Glazer, the attendant "allegedly took balls from the officials' locker room to another area on way to the field." There is reportedly video of the incident. Glazer says the league is "still gauging if any wrong doing occurred." It's been obvious from Day 1 the Pats were going to set up some sort of underling as the fall guy, the only question is if he'll sing. The entire "scandal" is long past played out. It would be a shame were it to dominate all pre-SB chatter.

the other area in question was a one person bathroom, where he stopped for 90 seconds...what can you do to 11 balls in 90 seconds?

Pats didn't do it. You can bet Belichick and Kraft wouldn't be out there daring the NFL to come up with something if they knew there was some wrongdoing.

And Kraft is right -- an apology is owed, from a whole lot of people.

so the kid took both bags of balls in the bathroom for 90 seconds :first: busted

Where's the info that the room he went into was a bathroom for 90 seconds? Cause if that's so then that's not much to go on at all

More than enough time to sit down and take a dump and release 2 psi on 11 balls at the same time.

After more than a week and 40 interviews, they have "zeroed in" on the guy who had access to the balls. That's some fine police work Lou.

 they had 10 guys in the room with their needles ready and waiting. oh wait...maybe kraft had IRobot right down the road build him an automated ball pressure releif machine that had 11 stations on it. Lord knows he can afford it

Smoking gun :overhead:

Why the hell have they yet to release what the psi in the footballs were at the beginning of the game? They were quick to post how much lower they were at half time than the minimum but won't discuss what they were at at the beginning of the game. Sounds to me like the refs forgot to do that part of the inspection

Maybe because they are quick to release other stuff making it look like someone is cheating but aren't giving all the facts?

Sure...I get that they do that (and not just NFL but other investigations).

I just always find it funny that people get so upset that they don't have every bit of information and sometimes act as if they are entitled to know everything during investigations.

If they are pretty much putting everything out there then why shouldn't we have the one thing that would help paint the picture? We have they were slightly below the minimum pressure at half time and the nfl doesn't know how that happened yet we don't have their starting psi at the initial inspection before the game?

Im guessing it's because Aaron Rodgers would be throwing basketballs and Brady frisbees and so it wont look like football any more.

Good one!

I don't think it's not having complete information that is upsetting people, it's the people rushing to judgment without complete information that is pissing us off. Particularly the sports media, who ideally would at least try to maintain some level of critical thought and impartiality.

If the media wants to stfu about this until the information from the NFL comes out, I don't think you'll hear much from Pats defenders. Even yesterday after Belichick made it clear he wasn't going to talk about it anymore, he gets question after question about it in his presser. They're just dogs with a bone at this point, and equally stupid.

I'd rather the NFL had wrapped up their stupid witch hunt, er "investigation", before the super bowl and taken whatever action would be appropriate. But it apparently isn't going to happen so everyone needs to just STFU until something is actually established to any degree of certainty.

This could get really juicy if its found that the NFL was running a sting operation and let the Patriots play the first have with balls that may have been below limit. Now that would be interesting. Think Kraft was mad yesterday :shocking: If that happened might be end of Goddell.

While listening they said earlier this year Minnesota ball boys were putting a heater on the balls until the league told them to stop.

Interesting. .. If true, that would mean the NFL intentionally compromised the integrity of 1/2 of the AFC championship game. That would be a fun shiot storm to watch unfold.

You actually think because Bellicheat said I won't talk about it, that they will just drop it? Yeah, if this in North Korea.

Obviously the ball boy was acting on behalf of the Colts, hence the 17-7 score in the first half and 28-0 score in the second half. :)

No. I know they won't drop it, they will continue to talk it in circles, to death, then back to like, even though there is nothing new to talk about or very little in the way of factual information known. That was the whole point. Thanks for playing.

Yesterday there was news that they had tape of Pats guy taking balls from officials room :nono: into another room before going on the field.

Yeah, no reason to talk about that at all. :shocking:

Yesterday Bob Kraft cried like a baby about news coverage.....yeah no reason to discuss that topic.

Yesterday Tom Brady said his wittle feewings were hurt by all this....yeah no reason to discuss that on talk radio.

Thanks for playing whatever that meant.

good point and valid, based on evidence so far, the team could very well have been set up by either the colts, or the ravens. There was probably an envelope waiting in the bathroom for the kid.

Both organizations are well know big time sore losers.

And I'm sure Brady triumphantly scolding harbaugh about the rule book didn't sit well with his ego.

I would put nothing past either of those filthy rat back stabbing organizations.

its up to the refs to ensure they are regulation, including adding or removing air as necessary.

This is bad news for the cry babies like yourself, the officials and the league.

Sorry pal :( if it makes you feel any better, I think the steelers would have had a chance to lose to the pats if they didn't lose their star running back. :)

Nah. If the refs didn't check something, that's on them. And if that's really what happened, then why the need for an investigation?

A Physicist Emailed Us To Explain Exactly How The Patriots' Balls Could Magically Deflate

JAY YAROW JAN. 26, 2015, 9:30 AM 37,979 116

Maddie Meyer/Getty Images

Science is on Tom's side.

On Saturday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick gave a surreal press conference where he explained how the Patriots footballs could have deflated without any illegal action on his team's part.

His explanation wasn't the clearest thing I'd ever heard, and I said so in a post covering the press conference. In response to my post, Kirk Hackett, a retired physicist who worked for the Air Force, emailed me to explain exactly how the Patriots' balls could have deflated even when the Colts' balls did not.

It basically comes down to this: The Patriots do something to prepare the balls. Their preparation increases the PSI by 1 pound. Over time that PSI would naturally deflate by a pound once the preparation is done. But the Patriots also hand the ball to the referees, who artificially let out 1 pound. So, then the ball naturally loses about one more PSI, making it underinflated.

Make of that what you will!

Hackett emailed me his credentials after I asked for them. He says, "As far as I go, you might be able to google me. I am retired and used to work at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Directed Energy. At one time, I was President of the Directed Energy Professional Society. As far as academic credentials go, my Bachelors with a physics major is from Dartmouth (1977), and my PhD in Physics is from MIT (1983). I could dig my diplomas out of the closet, but that is a bit of a hassle."

Here is the full email:

Dear Sir,

As a physicist, and having listened to Belichick's press conference earlier today, I can tell that what he said made a lot of sense from a scientist's point of view.

When the football is rubbed and squeezed, work is being done on the ball, and it will get hotter. If you want, describe the heating as due to friction. When the rubbing stops, the ball will cool back to the environmental temperature. The time constant for cooling depends basically on the materials used in the ball, but pigskin is likely a very poor thermal conductor, which would mean longer times, other things being equal.

The air inside the ball, only a few grams in weight, will equilibrate with the walls of the football quite rapidly seconds.

If the ball is still warmer than the environment when given to the referees, then they will be deflating the ball back to the requested 12.5 psi. By the way, just inflating the ball with a pump adds some heat to it. That is because the air is squeezed until the pressure in the pump is higher than the pressure in the ball before the air goes into the ball. The squeezing heats the air, quite a bit, but the air doesn't have a lot of mass.

So, now when the ball equilibrates with the environment, by cooling, the pressure will decrease, according to the Ideal Gas Law, particularly if the environment is significantly less warm than the environment where the ball was inflated and then checked by the referees. Obviously, it was a lot colder on the football field, and got even colder later in the evening.

This scenario, in my professional opinion, completely explains the data that has been reported.

Differences with the balls used by the Colts could easily be explained by different preparation procedures, or even longer waits between preparation and the referee check. Especially if the the Colts QB, Luck, likes higher initial ball pressure as has been reported.

Now, I have something bad to say about the media. You pinheads have been convicting Belichick and Brady without the facts or doing an investigation.

Some of you have even gone so far as to demand the Patriots be disqualified from the Super Bowl. Others have called Brady and/or Belichick a liar.

One of your colleagues at BI, Tony Manfred, is a prime offender.

In a just world, you theabsolute pressure ratio = (X +14.7)/(12.5 + 14.7)

Where X is the gauge measurement of the ball pressure at the field temperature, 45 F.

X = 10.98 psi.

2 psi less than the nominal 13 psi. Just from temperature differences.

There have also been reports that the balls weighed less. Ridiculous. Air doesn't weigh much. You would have to weigh the balls to a couple of tenths of a percentage, and you couldn't do that by just hefting the balls.

Why don't you report this and send it along to the NFL, too. It sure would be good to shut up the ESPN sensation mongers.

The NFL should do a real technical analysis, and some experiments.

Cheers,

Kirk

Actually that means there was no cheating involved. You and everyone else were saying if they tampered with the balls after the inspection then they would be cheating. Before the inspection it is not cheating if the pressure is a little too low. By that logic aaron Rodgers is a cheater since he admits he purposely over inflates his footballs. So if refs didn't check the psi before the game ten that's on them and he nfl owes the patriots an apology for painting them in a bad media light

I don't know about day one for me. I believed it was a possibility. One that they failed to mention and kept on insisting that the balls were deflated after their inspection. The whole process is one big f*** up. They failed to look at the dam type following the footballs and then they didn't see if the refs actually did a proper inspection before the game. This could have saved a lot of time and headache
