They will likely get away with this, because there's no way to prove what happened to those 11 balls after they were inspected. But much like the husband who is out banging his secretary, just because it can't be proven, doesn't mean he isn't cheating. If all of this does come out to be nothing then the egg on the face is that of the NFL. They made this a big deal by going public, with launching a full investigation with 40+ interviews and yada yada. You can't blame the media for reporting on a story of the NFL conducting a full investigation right before the Superbowl and you can't blame sports fans for talking about it. There is nothing else going on right now in sports. It's the dog days of the NBA and NHL, college football is over, there were no NFL games this past weekend, etc.

 

The freakin' NFL Pro Bowl draft with Chris Carter and Mike Irving had TV ratings on par with a NBA playoff game. It's the most popular sport in America and this is a "cheating" story right before the Superbowl. While I think it's of course being overblown, is anyone really suprised?

Well yes, thats a factor in as well with all the other things as to why this story has grown as big as it has. Bill Belichick plays a good villan and the Patriots seem to be in the middle of controversial stuff like this over his tenure. Stupid tuck rule, being fined for spying, playing games with the injury reports, always pushing the envelope on the rules, etc.

 

With that said, why didn't the NFL just do all this pre-work, behind the scenes? It would seem better to conduct some interviews and fact finding behind the scenes to see if anything is there, THEN go public if it was. And if they didn't find any wrongdoing just drop it.

If the colts inflated their footballs to 13.5 and they lost 1 psi, they would still be in compliance. Also, the Patriots have said that their preparation of the footballs, rubbing them up, may have cased the psi to increase by as much as a psi when they were first handed over the refs. The colts may have prepared their footballs differently.

 

 

Here is a miami writer who did a little experiment and saw the pressure drop a half a psi just by temperature without rubbing the ball up. Crude experiment but lets see others do the same instead just dismissing it.

Yes, cooling the ball causes lower pressure. I know the NFL is not full of rocket scientists but it boggles my mind that nobody in the entire league knows this.

 

Also I explained earlier that softening the ball would if anything slightly decrease the pressure, probably negligIbly.

 

I think we are arriving at the Occam's Razor solution that part of the prep process significantly heats the air inside the ball prior to handing them over. IIRC there is a method to soften baseball gloves which includes baking them, so it could be plausible. This doesn't explain why they would do it at the very last minute, or why they would start underinflated.

 

Basically, they knew the physics at play and did it intentionally, but I don't see how it will ever be proven, unless somebody talks or they find written proof.

I have no idea if the Patriots were deflating freakin' footballs. However this whole "you're just jealous of us!@#!" mantra from Patriot Nation is hilarious.

 

There have been dynasties littered all throughout not only the NFL but all of sports. Yes, sometimes people don't like them because of it, and you'll have random folks trying to go conspiracy routes, but rarely is there a general consensus that those dynasties contained "cheating". Patriot Fans just can't grasp that.

 

When you think back to the 49ers, Cowboys, the Packers, Broncos with Elway, or even modern day people like Coach K in basketball who win all the time and have backlash. None of them have some moniker associated with "cheating".

 

That moninker has little to do with hating the team because they are good, it has to do with what actually has happened.

Sho - you're smarter than that - NE wins pretty much every freakin' Sunday and they have for nearly 15 years... their level of "winning" is absurd even if they haven't won the very last game of the season in a while.

 

To take a team that wins that much and listen to so much crying and complaining about them from opposing fanbases.... wow. Sore loser city. As usual, these other fans talk more about NE than they talk about their own team. The possibility of NE losing or doing something wrong makes them happier than seeing their own team do well. And the media knows this so they pump out garbage to feed the monster and increase ratings.
