The story may or may not be true. I haven't seen it confirmed by anyone other than the 1 person who told it in an interview. Have other people that were there confirmed this story? Also, when I stated "authorities" above I was referring to law enforcement not her management.

So the shooter apparently reserved a hotel room over looking lollapalooza in Chicago but didnt show up. This tells me that the type of crowd was irrelevant as the country music crowd and lollapalooza crowd are opposites. The guy was just trying to kill as many people as possible.

 

My current theory is that ISIS recruited this guy with money. Reports are that he had some kind of exit plan and that this was not originally a suicide mission. He probably planned on exiting the country. Maybe the Philippines?

The way he weighted that piece of paper down and the way the three or four items on that table were laid out made it look like it was there to be read by others. Like it wasn't something there for a purely practical reason for himself, something that he was using in the flurry of the moment. (Maybe he just needed to reference it right beforehand though).

 

Per the NYT article Worms posted, he was strategic - a master planner, about everything, so maybe that just included the micro level too, like how he arranges his space in the moment.

 

Anyway, after reading that NYT article, and approaching this hypothetically that there is NO conspiracy to it beyond the one man's plans and actions, then it really seems like he did this because he was uncomfortably degenerating on some level (mental, physical or both) and he knew he could do a mass shooting 'well.' He was probably struck by the lack of success in other attempts. He had been into guns since the early 80s, and any effort in his life that he decided to undertake, he mastered, to his own tune. Mastering was what was in it for him.

 

Take empathy out of the equation, and this was another mastery.
