vuduchile 1,941 Posted May 21, 2018 The deli here in my town sucks. BUT! Everyone St Pats day weekend, they have a corned beef event. They bring in corned beef and pastrami from all over the country and people sample and vote for their favorites. They also do an O Danny Boy singing contest. I won it 2 years ago. Frozenbeernuts 1,652 Posted May 21, 2018 i didn't even know Delis in NY were something to be overrated. Im not a big city person though, I don't live far outside of it and going in to visit every once in a while is cool but I think i'd off myself if I had to live in the city or work in the city with the commute for that matter. I've been to a few NYC delis and yes, they were always very good in my experience..... but i've never even had or heard a debate about NYC delis versus elsewhere. Not like pizza debates. I bet NY deli's cut their sandwiches into triangles as well. Peter punchers
Bier Meister 1,517 Posted May 21, 2018 philly has best food in the country. Truth. philly is a very good food area, but not best in the country.. off the top of my head: SF/Bay Area (especially if one includes Napa, Sonoma, Healdsburg) NY New Orleans Seattle LA Boston Chicago Miami Philly San Diego

Grace Under Pressure 9 Posted May 21, 2018 No, not overrated, they typically are that good. Meat quality, sandwich/bread selection. And turnover. There isn't old meat as a result. Tough competition too. In most NYC neighborhoods, heck on most blocks, they will have a great deli. Most towns on Long Island as well. So the bottom-barrel places will go away if not up to par. And it's heros. Not grinders, or subs. Heros.

TimmySmith 2,782 Posted May 21, 2018 If you want a real Jewish deli sandwich, you need real bread. Rye or Pumpernickel. Otherwise enjoy your baloney on wonder bread from Safeway.

Bier Meister 1,517 Posted May 21, 2018 Rye is disgusting but I love the pastrami. i like rye (and pumpernickel) with either corned beef or pastrami, or as toast. not much beyond that though.

Hardcore troubadour 12,695 Posted May 21, 2018 Yea were gonna stop at broccoli on a sandwich, sure. Try it. It's simplicity is what makes it great. Plus the bitterness of the rabe is delicious against the bread and roast beef. But the bread is really the key.

wiffleball 4,649 Posted May 21, 2018 Let's be clear here. Jewish delis are the bomb. And they're the ones who pretty much started the whole Deli concept here in the states. An Italian deli? Is fine, if you want an Italian sandwich. Big whoop. But a Jewish deli? Not only incredible deli meats and sandwiches, but a whole slew of hot and cold on trays. Side dishes, baked goods, you name it. In fact, if I was stuck in one restaurant in my entire life? It would be Kenny and Ziggy's Jewish deli in all places Houston Texas. Houston has a crapload of ridiculously wealthy Jews in a very specific neighborhood. Kenny and Ziggy's serves the whole community. Just so you know it's legit. I was having lunch there one day and sat right next to Carl Reiner is Kid. He's talking to a table full of guys about the Gaza Strip and other Israeli related matters. Doesn't get more Jewish than that. New Yorkers tend to overstate everything, but damn few things beat a good Jewish deli.
wiffleball 4,649 Posted May 21, 2018 Rye is disgusting but I love the pastrami. I used to think so. Try the light Rye. Perfect.
wiffleball 4,649 Posted May 21, 2018 I bet NY deli's cut their sandwiches into triangles as well. Peter punchers and the dumb asses in Chicago put the cheese on the bottom of the sandwich. What's up with that?
mighty_thor 115 Posted May 21, 2018 I read an article a while back about NYC Jewish delis when Carnegie deli closed down. There was at one time 1500 Jewish delis in NYC and there are only like 25 left today.
BunnysBastatrds 1,926 Posted May 22, 2018 Jewish delis are where it's at. Can't beat the corned beef...anywhere..Or the Jewish rye. I imagine NY deli's are pretty much this. Est sammich I ever had was in a Manhattan deli. Brunswager on Jewish rye with provolone cheese and spicy mustard. I've eaten the best here. Nothing tops that one. jerryskids 5,213 Posted May 22, 2018 Rye is disgusting but I love the pastrami. Agreed, rye can lick my taint. Give me sourdough instead. And I only like hot sandwiches/subs. Also I can't say that I've been to a NY deli, but I can say that all of the handful of good delis smattered around Phoenix were started by NY expats. So while I like to give the New Yorkers here shiot about thinking everything about their city is the best, I'll concede it on the delis.
