Basically, McDonald's was warned numerous times that the way they were heating their coffee made it way hotter than it should have been. But to save money they disregarded the warnings. The woman suffered a lot more than a superficial burn. She had to have skin grafs. Initially she only asked that McDonald's pay her medical bills and serve the coffee at safer temperatures . They didn't so she sued.

If they had left that out like many other chains did, they would have been fine. And after having worked in the service industry for some of my earlier years, I know that one of the biggest bitching topics of old folks is that the coffee is not hot enough. McDonalds was probably just pissed about hearing it all the time and turned the burners on full.
