PA Lt. Governor and now Senate candidate, John Fetterman described having a mini-stroke, blood clot removed, in hospital for several days, got a pacemaker.

None of this happens to them if they don't take the clot shot.

They had pretty significant excess deaths in 2020.   Similar to some European countries, but much worse than all of their neighbors which are a better comparison. Some of those countries also fared better economically than Sweden in 2020 as well.

 

 

They then had few after that, thanks to a combination of prior immunity and good vaccine coverage.  However, they still have significantly more cumulative excess deaths than their neighbors.

You could argue some of the stricter measures may not have been worth the cost.  But you can’t argue that the number of deaths would have been the same.

Actually I'd argue that the damage done by the lockdowns and other measures far exceeds the benefits of what we did.   Yes, I agree that if we and the world would have adopted a more "Swedish" approach we would have increased our overall CV19 deaths.   But by how much?   Would it have been a significant # compared to the alternative?  The "countermeasures" have shown they mostly didn't work (other than the vaccine).   

Simply by avoiding large, contained groups of people, people with symptoms, and protecting elderly & at risk people  - we would have largely achieved the same results as what we did with non of the resulting damage.   

The counter is still going on the damage from the lockdowns.   We are still a couple of years away from really knowing that answer.

I wouldn't totally disagree with this, and I've never been a huge fan of lockdowns other than the first like 2 months.

However I have a few problems with this statement.  First, how exactly would we have "protected the elderly"?   Unless you're just talking about the Dem governors killing them by sending infected patients there I agree, but due to how contagious it was/is and many of the nursing home outbreaks starting with employees, we probably would have seen even more elderly deaths than we did if the rest of the country was encouraged to go on as normal.   And if there were "lockdown deaths," many of them were likely among the elderly (increase in alzheimer/dementia deaths although some of that was likely uncounted covid), so we wouldn't have been able to avoid that, and maybe would have made it worse if they realized they were the only ones actually locked down.

But I also think you are overstating the "damage" from the lockdowns.   Can you clarify what you think the biggest "damage" is?  IMO, it is closing schools during the 2020-2021 school year.  I think we were right to close schools at the end of the 2019-2020 year.  But we should have found a way to open more schools in 2020-2021, even if it meant wearing masks, etc (and I personally don't believe masks caused much "damage" but no not a lot of data on that).   I think the learning loss from online schooling will be our biggest regret of the pandemic.   However, I'd say the "damage" done to businesses by restrictions was overstated.  Even if there were zero restrictions, people were changing their behavior voluntarily.   Hotels/flights/movie theaters were going to be down ~70% or so, restaurants/bars ~50%, etc. for at least several months.   Maybe the restrictions lengthened this period a bit, but I bet many of the businesses that went under still would have went under even if there were zero restrictions.  Unfortunately a once in a century pandemic will do that.
