What are the dumbest rules in sports?

Recommended Posts

On 570 AM KLAC in Los Angeles today, they were talking about the Browns - Chiefs game.  They were saying they hate the rule where if you fumble and it rolls into the end zone, it is a touchback.  They were calling it the dumbest rule in all of sports and the Browns should have gotten the ball at the 10 yard line.  What are some of the dumbest rules in sports to you?

Sand Filled Divot rule - should be deemed GUR.

Although not a rule - the tradition of slapping hands after every FT (whether missed or made) is not only the dumbest thing in sports, but maybe the gayest.

That and ejecting a player from a game for targeting on the first offense

Down, but untouched?  Keep running!!!    So stupid.

The essence of football is to stay on your feet with the ball. Down is down is down. What difference does it make if a pinky barely touched the player?  What if a shoelace touches him, does that count?  How does any of that make the player any MORE down?  Ridiculous.  So why can a QB can kneel the ball without being touched, but HE'S down?  College football has this right.

Yea that’s another one. Always thought that was dumb as Sh1t. It’s fine if you catch it while down or anything like that but I don’t believe you should be able to get back up and start running just cause no one touched you

Not sure that it should make the list, but I think it’s stupid that offensive PI is only a 10 yard penalty while defensive PI is a minimum of 15 yards.

Gotta give the NFL credit for correcting a TERRIBLE rule several years ago...

WR jumps and catches ball, but defender knocks him out of bounds before receiver's feet touch the ground... remember what used to happen next?  Refs decided if WR's feet would have come down in bounds, had he not been knocked out.  They ALWAYS got it wrong.

The rule change came with one necessary stipulation - the defender can't catch the WR, carry him to the sidelines and toss him out.

Allowing those focking ghey celebrations in the end zone. As well as allowing those focking ghey baseball celebrations where they all hug and hop up and down.

Add in anything basketball players do.

I cant stand that leagues want more and more scoring, basically making defense a secondary aspect of any sport. That rule was total bull though.

Agreed with NFL and perhaps baseball.  But the NHL definitely needed more scoring. 1-0... yay!

On offense, fumble at the other teams 1, you keep the ball at the 1, fumble out of the other teams endzone, the other team gets it

NFL - Can only challenge certain plays

NCAAB - Possession arrow

Scoring in boxing

Offsides in soccer

Baseball managers squeeze their fat asses into uniforms.

Play it as it lies in golf

So true. Can't steal signs from second base or else someone hits you with a 93mph fastball the next time you bat? Screw that. Get better signs.

I agree with all of your picks (except for the weird fumble out of bounds vs fumble out of endzone comparison).

But this one... what's wrong with it? Seems like that's how golf should be played. I don't like how they can move leaves and stuff out of the way.  Then again, I'm not a golfer.

Agreed, I appreciate a good defensive match up in any sport. But getting rid of the 2-Line Pass didnt actually result in more goals scored per game. It did open up the game and increase the pace, though.

like what happened to Cleveland this weekend. Ancient rule that needs to be changed. Should not lose possession because you get a bad bounce. If there is a pass interference in the endzone, they don't give you a TD, they give it to you on the one. They can do the same with fumble out of end zone (untouched)

if you land in a divot or something similar, you'd know how silly it is. Also having to play with mud on your balls is stoopid

I have always hated in baseball on where the second baseman just has to be near the second base bag to turn a double play.   Give me a break.  Sometimes it is not that close.  If you want a DP you have to earn it by touching the second base bag.  What if the catcher only had to be near home plate to tag the runner out there?  Stupid rule to allow an exciting play to happen more often.

I can't stand the fact that you can have 2 Sweepers up to the Tee Line but after that, you only get one Sweeper but the other team also gets a Sweeper.

College football needs to get rid of the one foot in counts as a catch and where you are considered down whether someone touches you or not.

If your pawn reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any piece: Queen, Knight, Bishop, Rook.... what can't it do?  Remain a pawn. Why the hell not?

Never effect amateurs like me, but there have been extremely rare occasions where GM's reached a position where remaining a pawn would win the game. How is having fewer options better?  Dumb rule.

Yeah, nobody cares...

Kickoffs where the returner stands out of bounds when he touches the kick resulting in a penalty against the kicking team and the ball getting put at the 40 yard line.
