Shaq suggests women lower rim to make the WNBA more exciting

One would think that they would consider some of these ideas to set themselves apart from the NBA.  Otherwise it's just girls playing a men's game.

There is some truth in this.  The biggest problem that women sports has is that they intentionally try to compare themselves to men, which is a flawed starting point.  They claim they could be just like the men, yet when they fail to meet the standards that men reach, it's our fault and not theirs.  Then... we're the bad guy for telling them to scale back a bit.  @TimmySmith is 100% right.  Every women's team... even an All-Star team, would lose to a good boys high school team.  I'd venture to say that a "good" team isn't even necessary.  An average team would probably be enough.  When I was in a high school, our boys freshman basketball team beat the Rutgers girls basketball team in a scrimmage.  It's was 27-9 at halftime (8 minute quarters).  A bunch of 14 year old boys, who went 6-21 that season, beat an NCAA team 44-31.

They don’t have to lower the rim. Soon they will have a bunch of long hair dudes in skirts running the floor and dunking on a regular basis. More of the actual women will loose their roster spots, and everything will be rainbows & unicorns.

As much as that makes me sound like a cynical ass- get ready cause it’s coming. Then they can really start b!tching about ratings and equal pay.

If we continue down this path, I am going to retire early and focus my time and energy on making it to the the LPGA Tour. I would never have any chance whatsoever to even make the Kornferry Tour, but I have the talent and with proper training, I could complete against the women.

I had this conversation with a friend yesterday. We were at a bar and women's college hockey came up on the news

Women's college hockey - I'd rather watch paint try.

So we named Women's sports that are watchable.

I don't like women's basketball, but IMO lowering the rim is an attempt to make it more like the men's game, which they will never approach.  At least now, since pretty much nobody can dunk, the game is more about getting open for mid-range shots.

I don't particularly enjoy it or watch it, but I wouldn't change it.

Plus there is that inconvenient issue of having no baskets available to practice at the new height.

I believe most semi modern gym rims can be lowered.  

Driveway hoops can be lowered to a desirable height.

The stationary outside courts cannot.  

But yeah there would be some issues.   Girls HS team practices at 9'5.  Boys practice after....they need a guy from maintenance to come in and raise them again.  Stuff like that.

Someone here had recommended a podcast called Pain Killer Now and recently they had an episode where they discussed why women are so much lower than men when it comes to sports. They said most sports are designed around what men can do best and women do not necessarily have those same attributes. It was an interesting take at the very least.
