Probably a long shot, but I could see a way that Biden kinda skates away from this.     

After spending 20 yrs hiding in caves and eating sh!t, the Taliban is looking around a thinking: "take over, shake down US/NATO/Etc for whatever $ we can get.    Hostages, 'we'll try to be part of the international community', and whatever.   Just pay us cash for it."   All lip service but they toss the west enough crumbs to keep them off their back and still shoveling that sweet $ at them.   Then they just rake in $ from poppies, selling Iranians and Chinese US gear, China gives them a billion dollars to mine their country.  Whatever, just pay cash.    Then they just go "full Saudi".  Pray to Allah and kneel towards Mecca a couple of times a day to keep the fundies off of them.   Then they live  like kings, stack $ in Swiss bank accounts, and probably do a bunch of things that Mohamed wouldn't like but no one can see.   

2 years from now Biden admin is actually using Afghanistan as an example of "Biden's foreign policy expertise" as he runs for re-election because it hasn't turned into a total terrorist sh!thole.    Meanwhile heroine overdoses are up 20% around the world and no one seems to know why.     The Taliban is starting to fidget because some of their not really cool with Allah extracurricular activities  are leaking out.   So they start stirring up the fundies and a few teens willing to die for Allah to take the heat off of them.   And we lather, rinse, and repeat somewhere about 5-10 yrs down the road and we're wondering why they are attacking us.  This would be, of course,  after this admin is gone or near gone.

Biden is banking on people just being happy in a few years that we are out of Afghanistan, regardless of how messy it was. People have short memories and I would bet he will be right. Everyone wanted out. If the place turns into a disaster, people will be happy we are no longer a part of it. If not, people will see it as something that shouldve happened sooner.
