How do you honestly feel about Pat Tillman now?

Recommended Posts

I'm not gonna poll. I want honest answers.  I want you to think about how you feel. Compare say 2003 to how you feel now. Especially now. But be honest? Has your opinion of him changed?

I thought it was unfortunate. Still do.

Pat Tillman and I are close to the same age and he did what most men wouldn't; Including myself.  He was so moved / pissed at 9/11 that he quit his job and served America.  I respect the hell out it and God Bless him and others like him.

I refuse to let politics and the dumbassery of politicians over the past 19 years sway that view.

Add me to the list who agree with/like this post.  These are points (there are many unfortunately) where I wonder exactly how neurons bang around in @wiffleball’s brain.  Why would someone have a different opinion about Tillman because of this week’s cluster Fock?

Well you haven't yet plumbed the depths of my neurons.

See, I literally tear up every time I think about the guy.

Because you can do all the right things for all the right reasons, and still f****** die from it horribly and tragically and quite frankly embarrassingly because life isnt a  a Avengers movie.

And I fear there's a whole generation of who just won't ever understand that.

And every time I think of Pat Tillman. Which is a lot lately. I tear up.

Focking azzholes .

Both of these are true, sadly.

I have nothing but admiration for someone who is willing to put their life on the line for something greater.

Even more so if one gives up “the dream” to do it.

Sadly, while I have nothing but the utmost respect for our troops, I could never advise anyone joining up. You just know our idiot political masters are going to send you to a sh!thole to die for nothing at some point, and won't even properly take care of you if you get focked up in the process.

So, this thread was just an excuse so wiffle dik could tell us all how Tillmans death makes him cry. If you still cry, why are you bringing it up? Obviously the Afghan collapse hasn’t changed your mind. Phony.

He was in the army less than two years. Nearly half of that was training. I doubt they had let him in on the top secret plans by the time he was killed.

Do you know how many guys get killed by friendly fire? It happens all the time.

I'd venture to guess in a war like Iraq or Afghanistan,  friendly fire and things like helicopter crashes make up a very significant portion of casualties.

Don't know how true it is but I heard his guys got tired of his gung ho attitude and thought that he was going to get them killed so they "fragged" him.

That sort of thing was supposedly very common in Vietnam. Lots of lieutenants got shot in the back they say.

Yet you spread it anyway.

Did you *actually* hear from a person?  Do tell.....dudes that were there...... or some website?

I hate stuff like you just posted.

"Spread" :rolleyes:

I heard it from a Vet on a podcast who knows people who were there.

Does that make it true? No. Does it make it false? No.

We know he died from "friendly fire." Up until recently I assumed the story we were given was true. Now I'm not so sure. You are free to believe whateverthefuck you want to believe. It makes no difference to me.

He gave a proper caveat. If he had just said it as fact, I'd agree. As he did it was fine.

We can't expect everyone to be political experts.  I'm not even gonna grade him on that. He put his life on the line.  Salute him.

Right. A guy who gave up an extremely lucrative career in the NFL, a profession basically exclusive to alpha males, couldn't possibly have been too gung ho for some guys who just wanted to make it home alive.

It absolutely could've been pilot error that cost him his life. It could also very well have been his own guys who did him in.

Either way it's a tragedy.

I subscribe to the old adage 'believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see' but the guy sounded convincing to me. That doesn't mean it went down the way alluded to but it very well could've. Remote mountain top and all. I mean, if you weren't there, you don't know for a fact either way. You just believe who/what you choose to believe.

They decide to "frag" a high profile guy?  And the word gets around enough that a random dude on a low rent message bored even hears the story?  Sure, it's possible...but I certainly don't believe it.

Lost me at " some guy who wasn't  there said on a podcast..."

For anyone who's actually interested, they were Congressional hearings on this s***. Unresolved is whether he died by intent or accident. What is unquestionable is that the attempted cover up was deliberate and intentional.

After everything that I've read and reviewed, my own take is there are a lot of stupid guys the army, who screwed up big-time under stress and fire and fear.  Then their barely smarter superiors made it worse by trying to cover it up because they knew they killed a national hero and heads would roll.

What pisses me off among many things is there are hundreds of guys like Pat. Except they weren't NFL stars. And they died tragically and needlessly because stupid young men were sent to a horrible place by stupid old men. Most of the former we'll never know about. And most of the latter ? Will never be held accountable.

Not in this world.

Pretty much the same. I thought it was an honorable thing he did. I still do. It was a dumb war but most are, doesn’t change that some are willing to sacrifice. We should honor that more by not having it end up in vain but it’s not the individual soldier’s call :dunno:
