Just the tip

Recommended Posts

Tipping question / observation.

When I go out to eat, I generally tip 20-25% unless the service is just so horrendous that it warrants lower.... A lot of the time I just round up to make my bill an even $ amount. At bars I usually tip at that high end 25%.

And of course, when I have food delivered, I tip well.

My issue is, tipping when I have called in an order, for pickup, and drive there to get my own order. Usually this happens with chinese / pizza places where I call in a pickup order to grab on my way home from work / golf / etc and the place is on my way. Or a quick stop at a fast casual place like a Jersey Mike's...  Kind of like "why spend the extra money on delivery if it's on my way home?"

So most of these places now have the screens they flip around to you to sign, but before the page where you sign, it asks if you want to leave a 15%, 18%, 22% etc or NO TIP.  I always hit NO TIP but feel slightly like a jerk. Chinese places do it with their receipts giving little boxes to check off for the percent tip you want to leave and I will ignore those and write down my total as the total of the food.... but why should I feel like a jerk? Essentially you are asking me to tip for doing your job / providing the service of your business. This should be covered in the cost of the food. If i'm sitting down and being served, absolutely. If someone is delivering my food, absolutely... but you want me to tip you for cooking my pizza and placing it in a box??? Isn't that covered in the cost of my pizza because making pizza is your business?

1. yes I expect replies calling me cheap, especially troll replies

2. curious is you guys tip on simple pickup / walk in orders where you are not receiving any additional service? Did you do so before the heavy push to fish for tips (i.e the screens when you sign that are trying to guilt you into it)?

I tip on pick up orders.  usually a few bucks or 5-10% depending on size of the order and how well i know the business (I know a lof local restaurant owners).

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

Ordering at a fast food place, no tip.

To go order at a restaurant, 10-15%

Eating at the restaurant, 20-30%…potentially a lot more if the server does a great job and I’m in the right mood.

If I'm paying in cash I'll throw a buck or two in the tip jar. WTF am I gonna do with a couple of singles?

If I'm using the card, I'm not tipping you for bringing my food to the counter.

I’ll typically do about 10% for pickup orders.  It is annoying when they have the default screens where the minimum option (besides “custom”) is like 15% though.  IIRC Jersey Mike’s does this (and there I don’t tip much if at all in part because their sandwiches are overpriced).

Correct Answer:  A few bucks, but, not the standard 20% + for good service - for bad.  They are still wait staff that rely on tips yet they aren't fully waiting on you so I hit the middle.

I started tipping more during pandemic to help to the servers out.  Haven't stopped.

Think about it, they go through the time and effort to pack up your food for you.

Also it goes a long way.  Places I started tipping and have returned have treated me well.

So be nice to people, and you get kindness back.

Fast food doesn’t even count. And of course, eating at a restaurant that goes without saying.

Im curious why you feel the need to tip 10-15% (15 might be a tip you give if you get really bad service eating there) for pickup when it’s essentially fast food at that point. I get throwing a few dollars in the tip jar if paying cash or tipping because you’re friends with the owner but nothing is being done for you besides cooking your food and boxing it up

when you dine in you tip your wait staff because that’s what they rely on. You don’t also go in the back and tip the chef / guy who pulls your pizza out of the oven 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m okay with a few bucks, like you’re saying, but I don’t consider them wait staff. When I pick up a pie, it’s a cook or someone working the register who is handing me my order. It’s not a waiter or waitress.

I consider Jersey Mike’s fast food.

I tip 10-15% at restaurants when I get a to-go order because when I worked at one while going to college, we had people dedicated to to-go orders. They got paid like servers and relied on tips. They did less work than servers, but had more volume (sales). 10-15% seems reasonable to me.

No tipping for pick up, big tipping for Pizza delivery drivers.  It's worked out for me (and the drivers) pretty well so far.

It usually depends on my order.  Lunch: a sandwich: maybe $0 or $1

chinese: maybe $2-5

pizza… usually we get delivery. About $5

a larger meal maybe $5-10

for takeout from owners I know it’s likely a little more.  The past few years have been tough on labor and product shortages/cost increases. A little less out their pockets helps

I will usually tip a few bucks or something on pickup. Mostly just to not feel like a cheapskate.

Any more than that and I agree, what’re you tipping for?

Annoys me when subway etc presumes like 20% for making a sandwich. They just want me to pay their employees’ wages. Which I thought I already did by, you know, patronizing the place

yes Jersey Mikes is probably in the fast food. I put it in the fast casual category like Chipotle, QDoba, etc.

Jersey Mike's actually led me to starting this topic because I was there the other evening and they pull that crap where they spin the little monitor to me, I tap my card and am immediately asked how much I want to tip. In my head I am thinking "I don't want to tip anything because all you did was make my sandwich and wrap it up, which is what your employer pays you and hourly wage to do". So I hit the no tip option and feel a little bad because I know they can see it and are thinking I am cheap.  But its really just a principal thing for me. I really don't ever tip less than 20-25% on anything dine in or delivery..... It would have to be really awful service like vanishing for an hour.

Same here.

What about non food tipping? If someone delivers a washer and dryer or refrigerator and puts it in, do you tip them too?

I had those 3 things delivered at my last place and I basically gave both guys $10 bucks each. Mostly cause they set it all up.

One thing that bothers me is valet parking when there is no option to park your car yourself. There is a restaurant we like to go to on one of our trips and they have a full parking lot, but you have to use their valet parking. They literally are parking your car like 50 feet away. Then there is a hotel in Santé Fe we like. Every time you want to leave or come back you need to do valet. I'm not a fan of the forced valet.

And I also have a liquor store near me that has a tip jar? Same with the convenience store down the street. What is that all about?

I never tip when I call in an order and pick it up myself.  I don't tip people who are making a regular wage.  Waiters/waitresses are almost never the person answering and/or ringing you up.

I tip em because it’s back-breaking work and I’m glad as hell I don’t have to do it.

This is my line of thinking as well. I just don’t see why I’d be tipping regular wage people for doing the job they are paid a wage to do with little to no extra effort

I definitely tip the delivery people who install big items like that so I don’t have to. I’d probably tip them just for delivering, just like I would tip someone for bringing me my pizza. It’s the convenience of having it brought to you and in the case of appliances, saves you a lot more hassle.

tip jars in liquor or convenience stores is just funny.

I can only think of one restaurant near me with forced valet that I go to.  They never had it until recently. 3rd party company doing it. I was picking up a to go order and they were trying to convince me to let them valet my car even though I would be right out. Holy hell, stop fishing for tips.

Nice thing for me, I'm industry. So big discount at work and other places.

I don't know if it's just understood, or just understood by me. But whatever that discount is? Is the minimum tip.

Agree completely.

The funny thing is that the valet wasn't just fishing for tips, it's that they were doing that while being an inconvenience for having to wait for them to bring your car back.

Well then, you are a thief.  Nothing worse then the “guy” who milks the owners because they are “industry”.  Clearly you think getting “taken care of” is a privilege- I consider it stealing.

Enjoy letting that set in Mr. Bar Big Shot.  Bwahahahahahaha

It's more ridiculous because the lot behind the restaurant is very small. tight parking spots but even if you are furthest away, you are 50 yards max. So when I showed up to pick up my order, I parked off to the side near the exit. When I got out of my car, the guy is coming over to me in broken english asking for my keys so he can park my car. I told him I was picking up my food and would be right out, no thanks. He keeps yapping to me as I am walking in so I just ignore him. As I am leaving he is still trying to explain to me how I should have had my car parked by them.

It's comical for what you said, that I would also have to wait for no reason, but also comical because I can't think of a local place I go to with less of a reason to have valet parking.

I was too busy laughing at the idea of them driving off with your car, as you walk back outside and standing on the sidewalk, only for the guy to come back... where he then has to turn around to go get your car (as you continue to wait), then drive it back to you.... that yeah, I overlooked the absurdity of a valet service for that kind of place.

I didn’t use to, but started during Covid when dine in was closed or slow, and would typically give 20%, but have gradually dropped it to about 10%.  I ordered out a lot during Covid, and realized how big of aholes people can be, so I think the workers do deserve a little extra for dealing with these people - yes I know employers should just pay more (but that would just mean customers would pay more) but I like to think it might also help with employee satisfaction and retention.

Absolutely no tipping for pick up orders. All you're doing is encouraging management to keep wages low.

The equivalent of tipping at self check out in a grocery store!

Set down dining & pizza delivery, absolutely. I pick up a pizza at Topper's about 6 times a year. Sometime last winter, I was in the mood for one, but it was 15° below zero & snowing.

I ordered delivery. The bill was $17, I gave the driver $30.

yup. I mean, I'm also not tipping at regular checkout at a grocery store  and I think that is the better comparison. That person is paid a wage to scan and possibly bag my groceries. Just like the person cooking my pizza or taking my order on the phone is paid a wage to make my pizza.

When I walk into the pizza place and the girl who took my order over the phone is chilling on her cell phone, hands me my pizza in its box and rings me up, what would I be tipping her for?

Exactly.

And If it's a national pizza chain, there's a good chance the girl didn't even take the order. Many chains outsource that to call centers.

Pizza Hut started that a good 10-15 years ago. That's also the last time I ever did business with them. Not only did I have to stay on hold until someone from the call center answered, they screwed up my order twice in a row. For now I'm 100% loyal to Toppers. They take call-in orders directly from the store.

well that's different. I don't really order from chain pizza places and would view them like I view McDonalds.

I was talking about local pizza places where I know who I spoke to when I placed my order... and again, all that person is doing is taking my order when I call and ringing me up when I pay. Someone else is cooking the pizza, who I would also not be tipping if I was dining in. My tip would be for my server. Maybe they pool the tips, maybe not.. that's not my concern.
