I’m not trying to troll. I’ve written before that I approve very much of most woke ideas, which are about treating everyone with dignity and respect. I like living in a woke society and I’d like our schools to have more of this, not less. And yes I’m dead serious. 
Are there exceptions when woke can go too far? Sure, and you guys love pointing them out. When you do I will probably agree with you in that particular instance. But overall what are we talking about when it comes to woke? Respect for gays and trans. The Me Too movement. Acknowledging the dangers of man-made climate change. Teaching the truth about the history of American race relations, and recognizing that some institutional racism still exists today. These are all good positive things. I’m for them, and I want woke to win out.

I will repeat that it shouldn't be so hard to find what is in books.    Since IT keeps getting brought up, I tried to find an exerpt from the book online since I don't have the book, and couldn't during morning coffee.  I got a lot of general outlines of the plot, but no examples straight from the text.   THIS is about as close as I got:   

This chapter infamously ends with Love and Desire.  As the seven children make their way back, they become lost in the sewers.  With no idea what to do, and feeling that their strength is wearing off now that they have confronted It, Beverly suggests that they make love.  What follows is very surreal; as with the risque content in the Patrick Hockstetter chapter, it is awkward for the reader and King is again tap-dancing on the line of what is appropriate.  Yet he proceeds with the scene confidently, showing no shame in what he's writing.  As Beverly engages in prepubescent sex with Eddie, Mike, Richie, and Stan, one senses that this act is the true threshold, the final dance of the Ritual of Chud.  "It" no longer refers to the monster but to the act of sex.  Now they are truly adults and will share a bond that is beyond mere romantic love.  It is King's way of showing us that while childhood is a positive thing, so is the act of coming of age.  It also is a purification for Beverly; her father has verbally and emotionally abused her, making her feel ashamed of sex.  Now she reinvents sex and makes it a positive thing.  She continues to think of birds during the act, as if to her this sensation is more amusing and lovely than it is stimulating.  Finally she makes love to Ben and Bill, both of whom have stronger feelings for.  Ben is described as being very "big" and being the the first one to actually make Beverly climax.  We know Ben has had this crush for months.  Bill also makes Beverly climax as he will years later, a sign that her love is communal. 

 

Paired with my recollection of the stuff and the ages of the kids being talked about, I did find it odd that this book and some other  King was in a school library - which is why I commonly fall back to that example.  To me this isn't hard.  There should be some commonsense line for what is in a school library, and it should be equally applied.  Sexual content is sexual content.   So I raise an eyebrow when somebody thinks your examples are OK and I raise one when it's all about sexual content, but stuff like we are talking about are missing from the discussion.

#1.) I'm not the authority of all young adult novels. I gave you an initial list of books that have been criticized in the past for being too sexual for teens. Are their heavier examples than what I mentioned? Probably. Again- my larger point was in these cases there are people stretching their beliefs onto others. I'm against that. Would I personally read All Boys Aren't Blue or Gender Queer? No I wouldn't. I'm not gay and I'm just not that interested. I would assume someone who is gay and is interested would want to read it. I'm also not going to get overly upset about reading passages of the book stripped of context. For all I know- that blurb you read is a small part where the person is talking about an initial sexual experience. Plenty of books deal with the awkwardness of the first time be it more graphic or sensual. However, if the book is not in a curriculum (and to be clear- it absolutely shouldn't be) and is something a kid is deciding to pick up off the book shelves- so be it. 

#2.) It's not about someone being a hypocrite to me and if you took that as me implying that about you I apologize. It is about how what people want banned in books is a moving target and is more about them having their way over someone else. I may not like a particular book for whatever reason but if you do you should be able to read it. It should not matter what I think. Likewise- if a gay kid wants to read something that speaks to their experience they should be able to read it. The book shouldn't be forced on people or forced into their hands but if they pick it up so be it. In many schools across the country those two books are not even on shelves- they are in an online catalog that kids have to actively seek out to find. 

#3.) Again to be clear- I'm not saying "Screw it, this stuff should all be out there for everyone." I'm also not saying "We need to eliminate it all." I'm saying- "Let's let kids teenagers have some autonomy in what they read and let's let parents have some say in that discussion." If teachers are forcing kids to read a book with strongly graphic gay sex passages they should face consequences.

That's not what that is and "wokeness" has it's roots in Marxism/Communism (see Mao's Cultural Revolution).  You have a complete misunderstanding (either deliberately or ignorantly) of what "wokeness" is and what it's trying to do.

The American left is moving further and further left.  Your party is going to need a name change pretty soon.

What is crazy to me is that because Claudine Gay is a DEI hire there will never be any repercussions for her. Anything she does will be swept under the rug or just flat out ignored. It would appear she plagiarized her thesis. Using the same exact phrasing but changing "black" to the more politically correct "African American" and that was it. Harvard students would be kicked out of they were caught plagiarizing their work.  But it is ok if captain DEI does it?
