TheNewGirl 1,489 Posted June 4, 2024 Flying the flag is not disrespectful, it's a sign of distress. According to United States Flag Code, a legally non-enforceable set of guidelines that establish rules for display and care of the country's flags, flags are not to be flown upside-down except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

Engorgeous George 2,331 Posted June 4, 2024 My flag will not make its next appearance until the 4th of July. Its last appearance was Memorial Day weekend. When it is flown it will be right side up. As for my neighborhood I have seen no upside down flags signalling distress. We do have a guy two blocks away that has four Trump flags on his pickup. I wonder if that invites vandalism from folks on the other end of the political spectrum from him.

Engorgeous George 2,331 Posted June 4, 2024 The boy Scouts and the VFW use to retire old flags for you on Memorial Day. The proper way to do so is to burn them, or so I understand.

His side not only burns, walks and sh#ts on the flag in protest but also did not say a godamn word when his side was burning down citiies, looting businesses and assaulting and murdering citizens because...RACISM! Not only didn't say a word, but also supported it. I don't agree with disrespecting the flag, but I say the OP should GTFO with his fake outrage since the left is the LAST group of people who should complain about "disrespecting" the flag. Maximum Overkill 1,986 Posted June 4, 2024 There’s a long history of American flag-flipping in political protest, too. At an anti-slavery rally on July 4, 1854, in Massachusetts, abolitionist speakers William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth and Henry David Thoreau took to the stage under "an inverted U.S. flag draped with black crepe," according to the Massachusetts Historical Society. In the 1960s and '70s, the inverted U.S. flag emerged most prominently as a way to protest the Vietnam war. In 1972, Vietnam veteran John Kerry was running for Congress when he faced backlash for having published a book with cover art showing veterans hoisting a U.S. flag upside down. His congressional campaign at the time defended the image as a display of the international signal of distress. As a form of protest, the flag doesn't signal distress so much as anger at a perceived deterioration of promised American principles, according to political extremism researcher Johnson. “We place a lot of description of this upside-down flag as being a symbol of distress,” she said. “What’s happened is it shifted from that to an expression of outrage — a signal to say, 'America has abrogated its own principles and values and I am sending a signal that I disagree' or 'I see this as a violation of American values.' ” That’s how it’s been used in Black Lives Matter and abortion rights protests, she said. But if you'd like to say it is, then cool. If quietly flying a flag upside down at your house is being in your "feelings" vs disrupting a city parade, or rioting is what we are comparing, then give me the upside down flag feelings any day.
