Also, do you know what else encouraged the 1/6 mob?  Three months in 2020 when angry BLM protesters rioted, looted, destroyed property including federal buildings and police stations, and took over large parts of major cities, and nobody did a damn thing to stop them.  I would say they got a good lesson in what to do when you are unhappy.

For the purpose of this discussion, I don't want to move the goalposts into an argument of how violent it was.  Instead, I'm conceding it was violent, and/or could be if there is another one, and I assert that the Capitol/security would be more prepared in the future.

I believe there was a sense of "It's not going to get violent. they would never assault police and break into the capitol" and that if it were to turn violent the President would be able to de-escalate and wouldn't allow an assault on the Capitol on his watch.

What we learned is that they were riled up and told to fight like hell or they wouldn't have a country and were capable of much more than thought.  We also learned that Trump watched this happen... let it happen... wanted it to happen and did nothing about until it was clear that it wasn't going to work before calling off the dogs.

So I agree with you now that we know that these people and their leader are extremely violent we will deploy the military to protect our democracy if needed.  It's a shame we have to do this to our own people but it's where we are.

 I don't think a repeat of 1/6 is really even possible at this point. Unfortunately, it might be worse, just not centered at the Capitol. We already know that MAGA will not accept a defeat. If Harris wins, I would expect the violence to be less concentrated but more widespread.
