I enjoy giving gifts... not a big fan of getting gifts.  At least 50% of the time it's something I have no use for.  

I already know 2 female 'friends'  are getting me gifts so now I am obligated to get them something. Which is cool on my end... but again... I hate getting gifts and feigning excitement 

 

Side note/rant. I get people dislike giving gift cards because its not personal but I don't need more golf balls... don't buy me clothes as there is a 99% chance I will not wear them. I'm not saying I have any style but I know what I like and what cuts fit me.  Don't buy me a tech gadget unless you have some reason to believe I want it... for example when Ed's S.O. gives me the apple watch, i'll mail it to Ed because I don't want that . I don't wear watches.  

When I get people gifts I try to stick to consumable / experiential.  Tickets to an event, cigars, beer/wine, candles or perfume for the ladies etc...

We open presents Christmas Eve.  I like seeing the kids get their presents.  My wife and I usually buy what we want when we need it which makes buying presents for each other very difficult.  Why put that stress on each other just to open a present on Christmas?

We are doing a long weekend in Lake Tahoe next week, and we are going to get some new recliners.

next year will be our 30th. we are talking about a few weeks in the Italian, French, and Spanish rivieras.. or a winter trip to Austria or Switzerland (possibly Germany for the Christmas markets).

For those who say they buy what they need during the year, my cousin once said that Christmas is for gifts people want, not need.  

To that end, I'm going out shopping for a new putter today, a mallet, probably a TaylorMade Spider.  I don't NEED it, but I want it.  I would never let my wife pick it of course, but I'll splurge on something I otherwise wouldn't during the year.

She usually prefers to surprise me -- in fact my running joke with her is that if I want something, I don't tell her, because if I do, she won't get it -- but she has been super busy with work this year.  She did tell me she got me another surprise thing, tho.

Since I'm retired, I've been handling most of the gifts for the kids.  That's the part I like, seeing their happiness when they open stuff.

She and I both employ the same tactics.  We listen to each other throughout the year and make mental notes and surprise each other by showing that we listened all year.

I'll say, "Why's it so cold in here", "How come the grass isn't cut", or "Why's it so hot in here", and I've been know to say "How come the remote doesn't work"

She'll buy me sweatshirts, a lawn mower, a ceiling fan, or batteries.

 

She'll say, "What aren't the dishes washed", "How come the floors are a mess", and "Why are the clothes still in the basket in the laundry room".

So I'll buy her a new dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, and clothes washer.

Ended up getting the Spider S counterbalance 38" shaft:

Went to a nearby Golf Galaxy to try putters out, and I was ready to buy one because I had just signed up for 15% off in store or online.  In the end I was between the above and a standard 35" Spider red (the newer Spiders weren't particularly different and the red was $100 less).  The red was very good, but this counterbalance... it is a few inches longer so you choke down, and there is a weight at the top of the shaft which creates this incredibly smooth pendulum swing.  

I took both up to the counter to see if the coupon would work... umm, no, it was worthless.  Sorry Golf Galaxy, buh bye.  Shame, because I want golf super stores to continue to exist, and I prefer to give them my business if price is comparable (also for golf shoes in general, which I would never buy without trying on).  But, not this time.

I had seen one on eBay for $290, new, no shipping fee.  Talked to my wife because I could have gotten the red for around $200, and she said "shut up dummy, you haven't bought a putter in over 20 years, get the one you really want.   

Might not get here until just after Christmas, but that's OK.
