cyclone24 1,836 Posted August 13, 2016 For those that don't think Phelps is the Olympic GOAT, what else would he have to do to achieve that status? I don't think there's anything. I think the people that don't think he's the goat is just because he's in an individual event so he can win a ton of things. Personally I don't think you can fault him for that. Having said that I'll bet you anything Ledecky breaks his gold medal record. She's not in Sprint which would be the first thing to go with age. She's an intermediate and distance swimmer which those people can do that stuff forever.

She's an intermediate and distance swimmer which those people can do that stuff forever. I'll take that bet. Also it's funny that only one other swimmer is among the top 10 winningest olympians. Did they add a bunch of swims in the last few games? ETA It looks like a bunch of people tied for 8th place all time medal count (12), 4 of whom are swimmers. But there are more gymnasts in the top 10.
Reality 2,711 Posted August 13, 2016 Usain Bolt is a more dominant Olympian based on win percentage. Ledecky may end up being better than both.
vuduchile 1,941 Posted August 13, 2016 Phelps is the greatest Olympic swimmer and has the most medals. He's the fastest swimmer on the planet. No argument there. But you can't compare his achievements to those in other sports. A sprinter might run the 100, the 200 and maybe a leg of relay. That's three possible medals total. How many events did Phelps compete in this year?

I actually find it more impressive he can win with so many different strokes (mmmm..sounds hot)

I actually find it more impressive he can win with so many different strokes (mmmm..sounds hot) I guess that's where we disagree. I don't see much difference between all the events. In freestyle, there's a 50,100,200,400 and 1500. In breast, butterfly and backstroke there's a 100 and a 200. Then the medleys and relays. It's too much. In breast, butterfly and backstroke there's a 100 and a 200. Then the medleys and relays. It's too much. I don't have a problem with it. Distance swimming and sprint swimming are different. Usually, people are good at one and not the other. Phelps is the best at both, which is part of what makes it amazing. I mean, I would smoke most people I know in a 50 M race, as I am a good swimmer, and used to be on a swim team. But a 400? My old chain smoking ass would be sucking wind. And a 1500? I would be the floating corpse in lane 3. The relays are fine, make it a team thing. Which TEAM is the best. No problem. I'll give you the medleys, and all the different strokes. I mean who gives a fock which stroke you use. Its a race, get from point a to point b as fast as possible, thats all.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted August 14, 2016 Usain Bolt is a more dominant Olympian based on win percentage. Ledecky may end up being better than both. There are a lot of Olympians with a 100% win percentage. If your criteria are most medals won with highest win %, then Ray Ewry must be the greatest Olympian. But for land athletes there is a 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 5000, 10000, marathon, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, 3000m steeplechase, 20km walk, 50km walk, 4 x 100 relay and 4 x 400 relay. I'd argue there is more difference between the butterfly, backstroke and freestyle swimming than between sprinting, long distance running and walking. Cruzer 1,993 Posted August 15, 2016 I guess that's where we disagree. I don't see much difference between all the events. The difference is (1) in the technique and (2) in his competition. In each different event he's facing off (and winning) against event specialist - guys who train for that event. It's the equivalent of U. Bolt winning all the sprint races and the 1500m and the 5000m.
