jerryskids 7,200 Posted April 8, 2018 Poseidon's in Del Mar-San Diego Interesting, I'll have to try that. Our SD office is in Del Mar really close to there. I often stay at a Hilton up by the horse track; Cucina Enoteca on Via de la Valle is good (popular hangout for milfy cougars as a bonus), as is Brigantine up Camino del Mar from Poseidon's. https://www.google.com/maps/search/Restaurants/@32.9732741,-117.2690567,15z Also possibly the best (certainly the most expensive) sushi dinner I've ever had was at a place called Ken Sushi Workshop just south of there. I was in a work group of 8 and one of the guys knew Ken; next thing I know Ken is bringing out magnums of expensive sake. Then my boss (who was there) decided I should get the check because he would approve it. It was well over $1K and luckily my expense statement wasn't audited. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ken+Sushi+Workshop/@32.9265298,-117.2393738,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80dc064758ce13b5:0xdf257e7bff759339!8m2!3d32.9265298!4d-117.2371851 I'll do a separate post with all time bests later. wiffleball 4,797 Posted April 8, 2018 I can't say it was the best restaurant. If I'm going to say best restaurant? The overall experience at Commander's Palace is pretty freaking amazing. However, the best meal I ever had in a restaurant was... Pappas Brothers Steakhouse in Houston. They had a very limited special that night. Makes sense given that there's very few cuts of this. It was a veal porterhouse. For God's sake, hands down the best thing I ever put in my mouth. There was absolutely no need for steak Knife. Fuc there's no need for a butter knife except for you know, the butter. Just this Kismet of perfect cut, perfectly prepared, great wine pairing. A phenomenal experience. I've eaten at some great places around the country, but that night, that one meal was transcendent.

Pacifica's across the street from L'Auberge (try to get your company to put you up there) is also top notch. Don't ever try the Pizza joint on 15th street, the wife and I went there late one night (it was all that was open) and I swear we left there laughing so hard, their Pizza tasted like they poured spaghetti-o's on it

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted April 9, 2018 Hard to say the best. Some of the top ones... One of the best meals Ive ever had was some random restaurant near the triumphal arch in Paris. We basically told the guy we know nothing about French food, hook us up. He did well. Zola in Nashville was my favorite for years. Mediterranean food. Their paella was amazing. One restaurant in Cancun was phenomenal. Best meals Ive had in Asia were Condoms & Cabbages in Bangkok, and this hole in the wall place my local friend took me to in Kuala Lumpur. shotsup 836 Posted April 9, 2018 Some of the best BBQ I had was a roadside house (shack) near Lynchburg Tenn. was drive through and they hand you pints of everything (meat/sauce/beans/slaw) Loaf of bread and napkins. Best Ribs ever had was a no name place in Cleveland Mississippi- heart of Delta. Me and buddy were the only two white folks in the joint.

Best BBQ Ive ever had, and being from Memphis thats saying a lot, was some tiny little gas station out in the woods in east Shelby county (Memphis) TN. Almost to the county line. We heard about it in high school because they were supposedly pretty lax about checking ID. That turned out to be true, so they became a popular stop for kids looking for booze. But they had a pit smoker going and sold ribs and BBQ sandwiches (Memphis style of course) there with the Newports and condoms. Best damn bbq Ive ever had. Tried to find it years later and it was gone. I mean, the rendezvous is great and all, but there are better Hole in the walls.
Brad GLuckman 519 Posted April 9, 2018 I would say a seafood place in Iowa is one of my favorite, surprisingly. I think it was called 'Splash'. It was rated as one of the best seafood places in the US by the In-flight magazine so we went there. Biggest crablegs ive ever seen. Des Moines flooded years later and it was under water. Not sure if they reopened.

WhiteWonder 3,018 Posted April 9, 2018 the true best places are smaller joints most people never heard of. the " best places" are mostly reputation (whatever chef opened it or other restaurants its affiliated with + location) and people think its the best because they want to be able to say "i had an amazing meal at ________.". and while it may be good, they are likely overrating it.

I find most of those places almost always good, but rarely great. Same with steak houses. The chain famous places are usually lower end of good. Coreys BBQ is a prime example. Back in the day, when it was on location, it was great. Maybe the best BBQ in town. Fast forward years later when they have dozens of locations all over the country, and your sauce and food is for sale at Kroger, it just lost it.

For fresh seafood I wouldnt think Des Moines although there are ways to get it anywhere in the world quickly these days

I've eaten at some great places around the country, but that night, that one meal was transcendent. In my career I've eaten a lot of great food, so I can't easily pick the "best" food; to me it is more about the experience. Two that stand out: 1. The New England Culinary Institute used to have a campus at the Inn at Essex, Vermont. I stayed there in the early 90s in conjunction with some work we were doing with IBM in Burlington. Anyway, we happened to be there when some student was having his "final exam" meal; a four course dinner with wine pairings. Keep in mind I was maybe 23 so to me a good meal was Applebee's with Michelob instead of Bud. I had never had anything like it. 2. Spirito de Vino, in Rome. I believe I've pimped this place here before, to folks visiting Rome. It is housed in a former Jewish synagogue, with a huge wine cellar in the basement. We were just some random tourists but I think we met the entire family that owned it. The Euros suck in many ways but they have the right attitude towards a slow, enjoyable dinner. http://www.ristorantespiritodivino.com/ In neither case can I remotely remember what I ate. It was all about the experience.
