Side hustles

Recommended Posts

Things start to slow down here during the winter months since we live in a tourist town, and I was thinking about finding something to fill the hours when I have to be in the showroom, but there's not much going on.

The goal is to create some sort of additional revenue that will fund travel for me and the wife in retirement.

I already get paid a small stipend now for coaching youth football and basketball through the schools. We use that to fund Christmas presents and/or family travel.  I'll continue to do that with my kids while they're in school.  As they move up to HS, I'll do the same as either a head or assistant coach.  So I'm not looking to do anything that takes me outside of the showroom, like ubering, or playing in a band.

I was thinking about buying and selling something online, or using my existing computer, phone, etc for something productive besides  the geek club and porn.

Whatta ya got?

Can you weld?

Onsite trailer repair would be a good way to make good money/hour on the side.

I know people in Houston who make an extra 500 dollars a month working 1 day.

I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

Interesting.  I worked as a welder helper in HS.  I've used a mig gun, but never learned to stick weld.  My step dad builds trailers in OK.  He could probably show me how.

There's a guy who works with my wife who swears my kids could pay for their college by buying and selling baseball cards.  He's very active with shows etc, but I have a hard time believing it.

What about selling stuff for other people on ebay for a percent of the sale?  You take the pics and post it and then pay customers when it sells?  They bring item to you, you catalogue and store it and then ship it when it sells.  Obviously only accept items you believe would sell relatively quickly.

I'll tell you something one of my customers recently got into is the spray-on insulation.  He and his brother bought the equipment and he seems to be keeping quite busy with it.  You already have crews who install flooring, right?  Those guys are definitely smart enough to train to spray foam insulation and I bet it's a huge profit.

If you invest wisely and don't gamble on prospects  you could easily

Cards are just like stocks... There are gambles and there are slow guaranteed returns

If that's realistic, I'd be willing to look into it.  The guy took a look at my son's Pete Alonso signed card and told him it's worth $100-$500 depending on the grade.  It was just pure luck that it was in a pack I bought him from Wal Mart.

Where would you start?

That card could be worth $25 by the end of next year. That's part of the rollercoaster of new prospects.. you can hit big like 2011 trout's at 40k plus

Mantle never loses money long term

Imo graded vintage is the safe long term

Smart people can make a decent/consistent % playing DFS.  You, however, should probably just try your luck at roulette.

Leftist governments seem to be trying to kill 1099 gig economy jobs in order to generate more tax revenue by forcing them to become full time jobs.  So keep that in mind.  If you live in a state with a republican controlled legislature, 1099 jobs should be safe.

The situation is similar to union states vs right-to-work states.  Back something like 40-70 years ago, republican-controlled states set up right-to-work laws, which weakened the power of unions in those states.  As a result, a ton of businesses relocated from union strongholds like Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo etc to right-to-work cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, etc.  Its why 8 of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the US are from right-to-work states.  Its why the union stronghold cities rotted out from within and feature barren suburbs with collapsing infrastructure.  Wisconsin and Michigan recently joined the right-to-work states in the past 10 years.

The move by leftist state legislatures might generate a similar phenomenon.  People who wish to make it big by working a 1099 gig job may be forced to move to republican states.  California is trying to kill 1099 jobs, so you might see a huge number of people flee California for Phoenix, Arizona where republicans run things.  For some people, they might make $5000/month in income due to their gig job, but take that away and they drop to $2000/month.  They can move to Phoenix and live a life of ease or struggle in California.  Its a pretty easy choice I think for many as the income disparity will be huge.

I recently started to ref high school soccer. Usually two games a couple nights a week at around 50$/game. Gets me some exercise and makes some extra cash.
