I see the food shortages on the news but that hasn't been my experience at all.

Difficult times in South Korea, Iran and Italy (among some others but their news is surfacing more).

What I gather from following different balanced people - various medical leadership, epidimeologists & journos, is that the virus progress globally and supply chain ramifications are objectively, by far, the most newsworthy story right now but the U.S. government is (somewhat understandably) looking to avoid panic.

The best thing to do:

I've thought about storing rice and dry beans of some sort just in case SHTF, now or in the future.   Sams Club carries 25 lb white rice for $9.48, 12 lbs pinto beans for $10.39 and 4 lbs of Morton salt for $1.46

A ten pack of Home Depot 5 gallon buckets with lids is $45.00

It would be a small investment and I don't know, can a person survive on rice and beans?  I would assume so.  The thing to consider though is how to cook it and where would you get the water?  Not even talking about this virus, but planning ahead and having some sort of an idea of how to survive for X amount of weeks/months/whatever, water is a huge one to consider that most people probably overlook.  We don't all have a hand pump well or a stream in the back 40.  I probably have at least a year's supply of bottled water for 3 people.  But that's in a store in the country which if things ever got bad would be one of the first places broken into and looted.  So then what?  Stock up on guns and ammo?  It's really a weird thought process actually even thinking about planning for an event where one would be cooking beans and rice to survive but I honestly have that rice and beans and salt and 4 big cases of ramen noodles in my Sams cart and the 5 gallon buckets in my Home Depot cart and I'm prolly going to buy them all and in a few years time, my hope is I'll get tired of these focking 5 gallon buckets in my way and laugh to myself and shake my head and wonder wtf did I buy all this stuff for?  But, just in case, at least I'll have it.

I got three 5 gallon buckets at a bulk food store (wasn't expecting to see them there) Currently have two filled and just got lazy and haven't transferred one of the food items into the third yet. Got two 55 gallon water barrels. Dehydrated fruit, mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. This is why I felt crazy..

In a couple months, if battening down the hatches didn't need to happen, I'll start eating the food and figure out a better system moving forward...either always maintain staples like that (steel cut oats, brown rice, beans, various canned goods, dehydrated milk) in good supply or purchase a long term emergency food system. Leaning toward the former, but the portability of the latter is nice. Just seems easier to stretch out the former.

Potential pros of the prep:

Things in general may get really expensive in the next few months.

Maybe we'll need to halt social activity en masse for a while and it'll be helpful to not need to go to the store.

It's peace of mind now, and food later either way.

I think the biggest potential :doh:will be eating all those stoic staples under normal conditions for a little while. Learning like 28 different brown rice centric recipes.

Oh, yeah?  What happens when the guy at the pumping station who moves that handle up and down gets sick?

We have been discussing how a severe Chinese supply chain restriction could impact us.  The biggest thing is insulin for our daughter so we will stock up as much as reasonable (already have a few months in store), along with the infusion set etc. supplies for her pump.  For food we have some pinto beans and canned tuna, but I don't expect a food shortage or a pandemic so bad that we can't go out.  Especially in Phoenix where it will hit the 90s soon.

I'm not even talking about this, just in general if a person was to plan for a worst-case scenario, water is something important to consider.

We don't all have the good fortune of living in a swamp like you, Shrek.

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, warned that the spread of China’s deadly coronavirus in the United States is all but certain and said Americans’ everyday life could be dramatically affected.

“As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder,” Messonnier told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses,” the top public health official added. “Disruption to everyday life might be severe.”

Messonnier said the continued spread of the virus has led to a shift to a more dire tone.

“The data over the last week and spread in other countries has certainly raised our level of concern, and raised our level of expectation that we are going to have community spread here, so that has changed our tone,” she said.

The illness that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan has now infected more than 80,000 people globally. 77,000 cases have been confirmed in China with others in parts of Europe and the Middle East.

To date, 57 cases have been confirmed in the U.S., including 40 cases of people who the government transported from the Diamond Princess cruise ship from Japan.

The virus’ spread caused the U.S. stock market to plunge.

An expected rebound after Monday’s 1,000-point nosedive on Wall Street had yet to materialize by midday Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 500 points by 1 p.m. EST. The S&P 500 was down about 50 points and the Nasdaq 122 points.

The 10-year Treasury yield hit a record low of 1.32 percent Tuesday while the 30-year bond also fell.

Some experts anticipated at least somewhat of a rebound Tuesday, which has usually been seen following precipitous drops on a Monday, particularly after futures indicated a boost.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I think I may go prepper, worst case scenario is I make a food bank very happy this next fall.

I have a month of food already, but I may pick up another 2 months.

I agree and I think the window to do that is closing pretty quick.  There is going to come a point soon where panic sets in and the store shelves will empty quick imo.

Americans have been itching for a panic for years now.   Something, anything to get what is a collective paranoia into full froth.  This is it.  Just look at the morons posting in this thread..it's those wakadoodles that will cause panic.

Panic buying at the grocery store..Panic posting on social media.   They will claim  "I am only being cautious" while they contribute to mass hysteria...This should be interesting.

Sure. When the head of the CDC says it will affect everyday life, pay no mind.  No harm in stocking up if there is a quarantine. You don’t have to throw what you buy out.

Quote

Disruption to everyday life might be severe.

Might <> Will.

I’m panicking? I sent my wife out to buy stuff that will keep and we can use over the course of time. You’re acting stupid. I never mentioned water or electricity. Just food in case of a quarsmtine . What do you think happens if one kid or someone in a school gets this ? Schools closed. That’s ten meals a week that we have to provide at home. Now either my wife or I have to stay home. That’s another 5. I’m thinking you don’t have to plan like that.

My daughter has Type 1 diabetes which includes a compromised immune system, and she is much more likely to end up on the mortality end if this thing becomes an issue in Phoenix.  At some point we would bring her home and go into lockdown mode.  Now... this is highly unlikely, as it will be in the 90s here soon and it is a dry desert so I doubt this bat flu can become a major issue here at this time, but I don't feel bad about stocking up on a month or two of cheap shitty food.

Plus as I mentioned in another thread (hell maybe this one), there are concerns about supply chain from China, in our case insulin.  This is the most realistic concern and one we are prepping for.

Well the schools going to be closed. Then you’ll see the rush. Just getting out in front of it.  Not a big deal. You’re right though it’s so stupid.

Anyone with a compromised immune system needs to worry everyday.  The common flu(whatever that is) is far more prevalent.
